  • Contentious Integration

Open Access•Alexander Nützenadel, Nikolaus Wolf et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern European History•2026

This Forum examines conflict as a constitutive feature of European integration, challenging the view that current tensions are unprecedented. It adopts a long-term perspective, emphasizing how enduring conflicts over distribution, identity, and political sovereignty shape the integration process, particularly during periods of enlargement and institutional change. Drawing on diverse historical case studies, the contributions analyse how these ten…

  • Risk Management, Expectations and Global Finance

    Open Access•Alexander Nützenadel•ARTICLE•Jahrbuch für Wirtschaftsgeschichte…•2023

What impact do past experiences have on the expectation formation of banks? This article analyses the risk management of Germany’s largest bank during the 1970 and 1980s. In this period, financial deregulation and globalization increased the likelihood of credit defaults and forced banks to implement new strategies of risk assessment. The Herstatt failure of 1974 triggered a series of new regulations, partly based on initiatives of the banks them…

  • Erfahrung und Erwartung – eine vernachlässigte wirtschaftshistorische Perspektive

Open Access•Mark Jakob, Alexander Nützenadel et al.•ARTICLE•Jahrbuch für Wirtschaftsgeschichte…•2018

The DFG Priority Programme “Experience and Expectation – Historical Foundations of Economic Behaviour” explores how economic actors form their expectations under certain historical conditions. This project’s main hypothesis is that the formation of economic expectations is a complex process that cannot be explained solely by simple concepts such as adaptive or rational expectations, and is shaped by historical events and experience. In this intro…

  • The Political Economy of Public Finance

Open Access•Marc Buggeln, Martin Daunton et al.•BOOK•Political Economy of Public Finance•2017

This volume examines the major trends in public finance in developed capitalist countries since the oil crisis of 1973. That year's oil shock quickly became an economic crisis, putting an end to a period of very high growth rates and an era of easy finance. Tax protests and growing welfare costs often led to rising debt levels. The change to floating exchange rates put more power in the hand of markets, which corresponded with a growing influence…

  • Im Schatten des Staates

    Alexander Nützenadel•ARTICLE•Geschichte und Gesellschaft•2015

This article analyses the rise of public debt in Italy since the 1970s. It argues that Italy’s path into debt differed from other countries of Southern Europe. Rather than historical path-dependencies, both the macro-economic conditions during the 1970s and the specific interests of the institutions involved in the debt management can explain the countries growing deficits. The article shows how the Italian central bank was able to increase its i…

  • Städtischer Immobilienmarkt und Finanzkrisen im späten 19. Jahrhundert

    Open Access•Alexander Nützenadel•ARTICLE•Jahrbuch für Wirtschaftsgeschichte…•2011

The article explores the relationship between the dynamics of urban real estate markets and financial crises in the second half of the 19th century. This period was not only characterized by brisk urbanization, but also by the emergence of novel instruments to finance the developments of the large metropolises. We argue that basic elements of modern real estate crises can be found already during the 19th century: the inherent trend towards price …

  • Coping with hunger? Visions of a global food system, 1930–1960

    Open Access•Ruth Jachertz, Alexander Nützenadel•ARTICLE•Journal of Global History•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 13

The 1930s and 1940s saw the rise of a new model of global food politics. This model was strongly moulded by the experiences of the Great Depression and the two world wars, all of which had brought hunger and malnutrition back to Europe. Whereas until the nineteenth century famines and food shortages had commonly been interpreted as regional Malthusian crises, they were now attributed to global economic disturbances and imbalances. This article ex…

  • Geld - Geschenke - Politik

Jens Ivo Engels, Andreas Fahrmeir et al.•BOOK•Geld - Geschenke - Politik•2009
