  • Relations as basic – the Bradleyan descent

    Open Access•Barbara M Sattler•ARTICLE•European Journal of Philosophy•2025

I think both steps (1) and (2) of Della Rocca's argument are problematic as I will show in this paper: (1) treats relations as addenda to the relata which seem to exist independently of the relation. This is one way of thinking about relations – a way we will see very clearly also in Aristotle's account of relation. But it is by no means the only one as Della Rocca suggests for his argument; I will give several examples below of relations that ca…

  • The Concept of Motion in Ancient Greek Thought

    Open Access•Barbara M Sattler•BOOK•Concept of Motion in Ancient…•2020

This book examines the birth of the scientific understanding of motion. It investigates which logical tools and methodological principles had to be in place to give a consistent account of motion, and which mathematical notions were introduced to gain control over conceptual problems of motion. It shows how the idea of motion raised two fundamental problems in the 5th and 4th century BCE: bringing together being and non-being, and bringing togeth…

  • The Labours of Zeno – a Supertask indeed?

    Open Access•Barbara M Sattler•ARTICLE•Ancient Philosophy Today•2019

It is usually supposed that, with his dichotomy paradox, Zeno gave birth to the modern so-called supertask debate – the debate of whether carrying out an infinite sequence of actions or operations in a finite interval of time is physically or even logically possible. I argue that in fact this is not a problem raised by Zeno's dichotomy paradox, and that an account of the dichotomy paradox as a supertask (often implicitly offered also by scholars …

  • Aristotle’s Measurement Dilemma

    Barbara M Sattler•BOOK•Oxford Studies in Ancient…•2017

This paper has two main goals: first, it reconstructs Aristotle’s account of measurement in the Metaphysics and shows how it connects to modern notions of measurement. Second, it demonstrates that Aristotle’s notion of measurement works only for simple measures, and leads him into a dilemma once it comes to measuring complex phenomena, such as motion, where two or more different aspects, such as time and space, have to be taken into account. This…

  • A Likely Account of Necessity

Barbara M Sattler, Barbara Sattler•ARTICLE•Journal of the history of…•2012

This paper aims to show that—and how—Plato’s notion of the receptacle in the Timaeus provides the conditions for developing a mathematical as well as a physical space without itself being space. In response to the debate whether Plato’s conception of the receptacle is a conception of space or of matter, which presupposes some vague notion of space, I suggest employing criteria from topology and the theory of metric spaces as the most basic ones a…
