Marbles from four Byzantine churches at Hippos of the Decapolis: Archaeometric characterisation and provenance identification
Archaeometric provenance study of marbles from Porphyreon and Chhim (Lebanon) and early Byzantine production specialisation
Early Byzantine marble objects from Porphyreon and Chhim (Lebanon) were studied to assess the source of raw materials. In all, 66 artefacts, including elements of liturgical furnishings, architectural elements and daily use objects, were examined using optical, cathodoluminescence and scanning electron microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and δ 13 C, δ 18 O, 87 Sr/ 86 Sr isotopic analyses. The results indicate that the marbles came mainly from the Prok…
Ancient white and grey marbles from Aphrodisias: Multi‐method characterization
The paper presents the results of the archaeometric investigation, conducted for the first time with the use of a wide range of analytical methods, on white and grey marbles exploited in the so‐called City and Regional Quarries of Aphrodisias (south‐western Turkey). The research, based on a multi‐method approach and performed on a representative set of samples, was aimed to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the most important properties of Ap…
