Preslav Art Ceramics in the First Bulgarian Empire
The emergence of Preslav Art Ceramics (PAC) in the second Bulgarian capital is widely regarded as an emblematic expression of Old Bulgarian culture, but its archaeometric profile remains underexplored. This study represents a first attempt to complement archaeological evidence through an interdisciplinary approach combining several targeted analytical methods. Archaeometric results from PAC fragments and clay samples from the Byal Bryag deposit n…
Rock magnetic signature of human habitation in stratification profiles from archaeological mounds
Field magnetic susceptibility detects anthropogenic load along stratigraphic profiles, Strongest magnetic signal found in burnt sintered clay layers, Black charcoal strata also show strongest magnetic signal
Thermal profiles in varied experimental firings
Thermal profiles of 16 firings performed under various experimental conditions are investigated and compared, with special attention to cooling due to its significance in archaeomagnetism. Samples of different shapes and sizes handmade from six starting clays were fired once and repeatedly followed by magnetic measurements. The collected experimental data provide a broader view of the relationships among firing conditions, clay composition, and f…
Studying the potential of rock magnetism to distinguish combustion structures of different type
Rock magnetism has a significant potential to elucidate archaeological issues related to firing process owing to the strong dependence of clay magnetic properties on firing conditions. The present study is an attempt to characterize some basic fuel installations (hearths, household ovens, pottery kilns, kilns for building ceramics and metallurgical ovens) by the most common magnetic parameters (magnetic remanence, initial magnetic susceptibility,…
Imprints of paleo-environmental conditions and human activities in mineral magnetic properties of fired clay remains from Neolithic houses
Clay source and firing temperatures of Roman ceramics
During urgent archaeological excavations in the city of Plovdiv (South Bulgaria), a Roman pottery workshop was found, including several dome kilns, ceramic sherds, and a large clay deposit incorporating yellow and gray clay layers. A set of the ceramic specimens (kitchenwares and tablewares) and raw clay samples were investigated using a portable device for X‐ray fluorescence and laboratory equipment for magnetic measurements, aiming to provide s…
Rock-magnetic and color characteristics of archaeological samples from burnt clay from destructions and ceramics in relation to their firing temperature
Firing temperatures of ceramics from Bulgaria determined by rock-magnetic studies
Contribution of stratigraphic constraints of Bulgarian prehistoric multilevel tells and a comparison with archaeomagnetic observations
Archaeomagnetic dating of archaeological sites from Switzerland and Bulgaria
Rock-magnetic and color characteristics of archaeological samples from burnt clay from destructions and ceramics in relation to their firing temperature
