A Journal of My Misgivings: Liang Yusheng, Sima Qian, and the History of Qin, by Jeffrey Riegel
Zum Verständnis chinesischer Philosophie in Europa - Einige Anmerkungen zu zwei sehr unterschiedlichen neuen Darstellungen
Chinese philosophy is en vogue again. While the German media is full of terrible news from the People's Republic of China, the interest of an educated public in finding out about the background of the great and still distant Chinese civilization is increasing. The two books reviewed here, however, could not approach the subject more differently. While Heubel tries to generalize thoughts on the nature of Chinese philosophy, the fundamentally revis…
History of Pre-Modern Chinese Studies in Germany
Research into traditional China at German universities began in the early nineteenth century. It took several decades, however—until after the unification of Germany in 1871—positions at the universities of first Leipzig and then Berlin and Hamburg to be established in order to professionalize traditional China studies. The third and fourth decades of the twentieth century saw a rapid expansion, but Nazi rule between 1933–1945 led to massive emig…
Ban Gu's View on the “Second Victory” of “Confucianism” and the Fall of the Former Han
This essay, which focuses on the reigns of Emperors Xuan and Yuan in Western Han, complicates the prevailing presumption that Ban Gu identified as a Ru 儒, and valued the Ru contributions to good governance above those who were identified with other forms of expertise. By a close reading of biographies of all major Ru scholars active during the time of these two emperors as well as some later ones, this essay provides further proof in support of p…
Literary Works and Allusion in Three Biographies of the Hou Hanshu and Their Purpose: Zhang Heng (78–139), Ma Rong (79–166), and Cai Yong (132–192)
This article analyses pieces of literature included in Fan Ye’s chapters on Zhang Heng, Ma Rong, and Cai Yong. It interprets these pieces within the context of its authors’ biographies, coming to the conclusion that they represent different approaches to the Confucian theme of how to serve and survive in times when there is no good ruler. While Zhang Heng was able to make a career under such circumstances, Ma Rong survived but ran into great diff…

The Logical Composition of the First Chinese Dynastic Histories and its Impact on their Reading
The Historical Records (Shiji) were written at the end of the second century BCE. They are a description of the history of the world as it was known in China, from its early days to the time of its authors Sima Tan and Sima Qian. Most of this book is devoted to the first century of the Han dynasty. Ban Gu’s Hanshu (the Book of the Han), written around 80 CE, is about the history of the first two centuries of the Han dynasty until the beginning of…

The Court and Court Society in Ancient Monarchies
Monarchy was widespread as a political system in the ancient world. This 2007 volume offers a substantial discussion of ancient monarchies from the viewpoint of the ruler's court. The monarchies treated are Achaemenid and Sassanian Persia, the empire of Alexander, Rome under both the early and later Caesars, the Han rulers of China and Egypt's Eighteenth Dynasty. A comparative approach is adopted to major aspects of ancient courts, including thei…
The imperial court in Han China
A book on the imperial court of ancient China's Han dynasty has yet to be written. Most specialists working in the early China field see the court as one specific part of central administration and descriptions subsume it under this category. Thus, the court is seen as the central institution which some offices belonged to, whereas the heads and senior members of other offices and ministries went there from time to time in order to discuss matter…
Praise and Slander: The Evocation of Empress Lü in the Shiji and the Hanshu
This article contains a close reading of the accounts of Empress Lü in the Shiji and the Hanshu. Its main argument is that the views of Sima Qian and Ban Gu about her are marked by considerable differences, although they may seem alike at first sight. For Sima Qian, the main feature dominating the life of Empress Lü was fear for herself and for her clan, whereas Ban Gu attributed her actions to naked cruelty. According to Sima Qian, the battle be…
