  • Public art as public history

    Open Access•Slobodan Perovic, Sanja Perovic•ARTICLE•Rethinking History•2025•References: 4

This article investigates the nature of the ‘public’ in public history by returning to a crucible moment in 1970s Britain when public art and public history were not clearly differentiated. It takes as its case-study two public art projects undertaken by the pioneering English multi-media and performance artist Stuart Brisley: the Hille Fellowship (1970–71) and the Peterlee Project (1976–77). Both are emblematic of a new kind of art activism that…

  • Performance art and revolution

Slobodan Perovic, Sanja Perovic•BOOK•Performance Art and Revolution•2023

This book assesses Stuart Brisley’s seminal influence on British art through his lifelong engagement with the histories and imaginaries of revolution. The issue of ethnicity in France, and how ethnicities are represented there visually, remains one of the most important and polemical aspects of French post-colonial politics and society. This is the first book to analyse how a range of different ethnicities have been represented across contemporary French visual culture. • Time against the sovereign power

    Slobodan Perovic, Sanja Perovic•ARTICLE•Textual Practice•2023

Ever since Gramsci's famous reformulation, there has been increased scrutiny of the term ‘interregnum' across the cultural field. Yet while extensively discussed as a political, sociological or historical concept, its relation to a visual vocabulary of art and design is less noticed. This article reconsiders the interregnum in light of the close relation between art and political representation that emerges during periods of crisis. More specific…

  • Dead history, live art

    Slobodan Perovic, Sanja Perovic•CHAPTER•Authenticity•2020

Recently, there has been a remarkable convergence between performance art and history, with the 'historical turn' in performance art mirrored by a 'performative turn' within history. This raises the question: can performance itself be considered historical knowledge? This article pursues this question through the work of Stuart Brisley, the English multi-media artist well-known for his durational works from the late 1960s, some of which were also…

  • Team and project composition in big physics experiments

    Open Access•Slobodan Perovic•ARTICLE•Filozofija i drustvo•2019

Identifying optimal ways of organizing exploration in particle physics mega-labs is a challenging task that requires a combination of case-based and formal epistemic approaches. Data-driven studies suggest that projects pursued by smaller master-teams (fewer members, fewer sub-teams) are substantially more efficient than larger ones across sciences, including experimental particle physics. Smaller teams also seem to make better project choices th…

  • No Future or Still in Year One? Revisionist versus Lyricist Approaches to the French Revolution

    Slobodan Perovic, Sanja Perovic•ARTICLE•Poetics Today•2016•References: 10

Since 1989 there have been competing accounts of the French Revolution. For self-styled revisionist historians such as François Furet, the revolutionary period that began in 1789 is over and should be analyzed historically. The philosopher Alain Badiou, in contrast, claims that historicization denies the very nature of the revolutionary event. By considering the French revolutionary calendar and the concept of time it expresses, this article argu…

  • The rebirth of the morphogenetic field as an explanatory tool in biology

    Open Access•Slobodan Perovic•ARTICLE•Filozofija i drustvo•2013

I discuss two uses of the concept of the morphogenetic field, a tool of the 19th century biology motivated by particular ontological views of the time, which has been re-emerging and increasingly relevant in explaining microbiological phenomena. I also consider the relation of these uses to the Central Dogma of modern biology as well as Modern Synthesis of Darwinism and genetics. An induced morphogenetic field is determined by a physical (e.g., g…

  • Death by Volcano

    Slobodan Perovic, Sanja Perovic•ARTICLE•French Studies•2013

This paper compares the trial and execution of Marie-Antoinette on 16 October 1793 with the performance, two days later, of Sylvain Maréchal's hit play Le Jugement dernier des rois , which staged the death of all of Europe's monarchs by an exploding volcano. What links them is the revolutionary concept of rupture, in which the historical breach with the past, associated with the death of the king, was to have established a new temporal relation b…

  • Seeking Depth in Science

    Open Access•Slobodan Perovic•ARTICLE•Philosophy of the Social Sciences•2012•References: 6

Michael Strevens develops kairetic account of causal explanations as a brand of explanatory reductionism. He argues that explanations in higher-level sciences are complete (stand-alone) only because they can be potentially deepened—that is, added kernels of causal processes all the way down to the level of micro-physical relations. Thus, they are, in essence, the result of abstraction from deeper causal explanatory levels. I argue that Strevens’s…

For some time now, certain theorists have been urging us to move beyond text-based understandings of culture to consider the impact of new media on the structure and organization of knowledge. This article, however, reconsiders the usual priority given to digital media by comparing Wikipedia, the free, user-led online Encyclopedia, with Diderot and D'Alembert's eighteenth-century Encyclopédie. • Le cadavre exquis

Slobodan Perovic, Sanja Perovic•ARTICLE•New Literary History•2005

This essay develops a concept of tragedy and its relation to historical representation through a reading of Racine's Bajazet. The only contemporary play in Racine's corpus, Bajazet poses the question of the relation between past and present both within tragic representation and between tragedy and the different historical periods in which it flourished. Drawing on the crucial role played by Bajazet's material body in constructing the tragic space…
