In the context of China's low fertility
Using Downing and Roush's (1985) feminist identity development (FID) model, this study examines whether and how the pervasive gender inequality in China is linked to Chinese women's feminist beliefs and their marriage attitudes, and whether specific dimensions of feminist identity, such as passive acceptance and revelation, mediate the relationship between perceived gender inequality and marriage attitudes. An online survey of 251 never-married C…
Collaborative Processes in the Development of the International Competences for Undergraduate Psychology ( Icup ) Model
Across all nations, undergraduate psychology programmes aim to promote the acquisition of foundational psychology competences. Yet, until recently, a universally recognised model outlining essential competences did not exist. The International Collaboration on Undergraduate Psychology Outcomes (ICUPO) addressed this gap by developing the International Competences for Undergraduate Psychology (ICUP) Model. The aim of this article is to provide gui…
A longitudinal, mixed methods study exploring the impact of civic engagement on psychosocial outcomes across early to mid adulthood
Civic engagement during emerging adulthood plays a pivotal role in fostering a sense of community responsibility, providing a sense of societal purpose, and contributes to improved psychological adjustment. In this mixed-method longitudinal study, we further explored how civic engagement and psychological adjustment codevelop across emerging adulthood. Participants were drawn from The Future's Study, a Canadian longitudinal study capturing the tr…
The Influences of Role, Action Contribution, and Outcome Feedback on Individual and Joint Sense of Agency
Individuals can experience both “I” based individual agency and “we” based joint agency during cooperative action. This study examined how three key factors, role identity (leader, follower), action contribution (high, equal, low), and outcome feedback (success, failure, none), influence these two forms of agency. Through three experiments using goal‐directed joint tasks and subjective agency ratings, we systematically explored their main and int…
Addressing climate change with behavioral science
Effectively reducing climate change requires marked, global behavior change. However, it is unclear which strategies are most likely to motivate people to change their climate beliefs and behaviors. Here, we tested 11 expert-crowdsourced interventions on four climate mitigation outcomes: beliefs, policy support, information sharing intention, and an effortful tree-planting behavioral task. Across 59,440 participants from 63 countries, the interve…
Testing the underlying structure of unfounded beliefs about Covid-19 around the world
Unfounded—conspiracy and health—beliefs about COVID-19 have accompanied the pandemic worldwide. Here, we examined cross-nationally the structure and correlates of these beliefs with an 8-item scale, using a multigroup confirmatory factor analysis. We obtained a two-factor model of unfounded (conspiracy and health) beliefs with good internal structure (average CFI = 0.98, RMSEA = 0.05, SRMR = 0.04), but a high correlation between the two factors (…

The Development of Response and Interference Inhibition in Children
A serious game titled "Crossing the Jungle" was developed in this study to train children's inhibition skills using the Stroop task. The effects of inhibitory control on children were tested by a pre-test, post-test, and one-month follow-up test. In the control groups, children were asked to play a commercial game instead. In experiment 1, 48 participants chose either the training or control game voluntarily, whereas, in experiment 2, 44 particip…
City-level sustainable development impacts on environmental literacy
Research in environmental education adopts a broad concept of environmental literacy, recognizing the multifaceted nature that encompasses cognitive, affective, and behavioral components. However, minimal research has examined how these components interact with each other across various cities. The present study aims to fill this gap by investigating the interplay between the components of environmental literacy, such as affiliation with nature, …

Promoting Positive Social Interactions
The purpose of this perspective article is to identify problematic behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic and recommend a school-based intervention (e.g., self-reflection, motivational interview, and workbook) to address post-COVID social anxiety among children and adolescents. The recommendations involve comparing students' social interaction behaviors pre-pandemic, during the pandemic, and post-pandemic, and evaluating any behavioral changes in…
Associations Between Primary Residence and Mental Health in Global Marginalized Populations
Public opinion about climate policies
Around the world, most people are aware of the problem of climate change, believe it is anthropogenic, and feel concerned about its potential consequences. What they think should be done about the problem, however, is less clear. Particularly due to widespread support among policy experts for putting a price on greenhouse gas emissions, more studies have investigated public attitudes towards carbon taxes than any other type of policy. Such studie…

Revisiting Social Value Orientations and Environmental Attitude–Identity–Intention in Decomposed Games
Past research has identified social value orientation (e.g., prosocial vs. proself) as possible underlying facilitators of pro-environmental intentions. However, recent studies have failed to draw a causal relationship using an experimental design such as priming. The current study attempted to address this issue by revisiting the relationship using a decomposed game. In addition, the current study extended the relationship between social value o…

Meaning in Life Mediates the Association between Environmental Engagement and Loneliness
Although the positive outcomes of human-environment interactions have been established, research examining the motivation between engagement in pro-environmental activities and psychological well-being is limited. In this mixed-methods study, the relationship between pro-environmental engagement, meaning in life, and well-being, including loneliness and depression, were investigated in a sample of 112 young adults in Canada. It was found that eng…
The Role of Community in Black Identity Development and Occupational Choice
Black Americans have historically been excluded from societal associations and faced wavering instability in their households, forcing them to work together for their individual and collective well-being. In past research, more than half of Black American students enrolled in school opted to pursue social or educational careers. Findings suggest that Black Americans’ occupational development is influenced by their family and community ties. In th…
Development of Religious Identity and Commitment During Emerging Adulthood
Past research has found that religious commitment declines during emerging adulthood unless individuals make significant life commitments. A growing body of research has suggested that a resolution of religious commitment is related to personal identity development. In the present study, we examined religious belief and identity in relation to religious commitment during emerging and young adulthood longitudinally and using a mixed-methods approa…
The codevelopment of community involvement and generative concern pathways in emerging and young adulthood
In this longitudinal Canadian study, we investigated the relationship between the developmental trajectories of community involvement and generative concern measured at ages 23, 26, and 32. Participants completed a questionnaire on youth involvement, the Youth Involvement Inventory (YII), and the Loyola Generativity Scale (LGS) at all 3 ages. A latent growth model (LGM) of community involvement predicting time-specific variance in the LGS reveale…
English proficiency and acculturation among Chinese immigrant youth in Canada
The main focus of this study was to refine our understanding of the link between English proficiency and mainstream acculturation in adolescent Chinese immigrants. The sample consisted of 112 adolescents in grades 7–12 living in urban areas in southern Ontario, Canada. English proficiency was assessed individually using standardised tests of vocabulary knowledge, reading comprehension, and reading fluency. Mainstream acculturation was measured by…
Age-related differences in moral identity across adulthood
In this study, age-related differences in adults' moral identity were investigated. Moral identity was conceptualized a context-dependent self-structure that becomes differentiated and (re)integrated in the course of development and that involves a broad range of value-orientations. Based on a cross-sectional sample of 252 participants aged 14 to 65 years (148 women, M = 33.5 years, SD = 16.9) and a modification of the Good Self-Assessment, it wa…
Generative Concern and Environmentalism
In a mixed-methods longitudinal study, we examined the relationship between Erikson’s construct of generativity, measured at ages 23 and 26, and environmentalism at age 32. Over a hundred Canadian youth completed a questionnaire that measured generative concerns. Environmentalism was assessed by questionnaires on involvement, identity, and attitudes, as well as through narratives about personal experiences with the environment. Narratives were co…
The Role of Acculturation in Reading a Second Language
The main purpose of this study was to bridge the gap between the literature on cognitive variables related to English literacy learning skills, as suggested by the simple view of reading, and the literature on sociocultural variables, specifically acculturation. The sample consisted of 94 Chinese immigrant adolescents from grades 7–12 in Waterloo Region in and the metropolitan Toronto area of Ontario, Canada. Acculturation was measured by a quest…
