  • Children Show More Selective Cognitive Offloading After First Being Compelled to Offload Indiscriminately

    Open Access•Kristy L Armitage, Alicia K Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Cognitive Science•2025•References: 40

With the rise of wearable technologies, mobile devices and artificial intelligence comes a growing pressure to understand downstream effects of cognitive offloading on children's future thinking and behavior. Here, we explored whether compelling children to use an indiscriminate cognitive offloading strategy affects their subsequent strategy selection. Six‐ to 9‐year‐olds ( N = 128) completed a task where manual rotation of stimuli sometimes offl…

  • Creativity and flexibility in young children's use of external cognitive strategies

Kristy L Armitage, Thomas Suddendorf et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2023•Cited by: 1

A cardinal feature of adult cognition is the awareness of our own cognitive struggles and the capacity to draw upon this awareness to offload internal demand into the environment. In this preregistered study conducted in Australia, we investigated whether 3-8-year-olds ( N = 72, 36 male, 36 female, mostly White) could self-initiate such an external metacognitive strategy and transfer it across contexts. Children watched as an experimenter demonst…

  • Children boost their cognitive performance with a novel offloading technique

    Open Access•Kristy L Armitage, Jonathan Redshaw•ARTICLE•Child Development•2022

Ninety-seven children aged 4–11 (49 males, 48 females, mostly White) were given the opportunity to improve their problem-solving performance by devising and implementing a novel cognitive offloading strategy. Across two phases, they searched for hidden rewards using maps that were either aligned or misaligned with the search space. In the second phase, maps were presented on rotatable turntables, thus allowing children to manually align all maps …
