Autonomic Psychophysiology of Preadolescent Anxiety
The present study sought to build on prior research by examining within‐system (sympathetic nervous system [SNS] × SNS) and cross‐system (SNS × parasympathetic nervous system [PNS]) interactions between measures of autonomic reactivity to social stress as predictors of anxiety. The physiological responses (respiratory sinus arrhythmia [RSA], skin conductance level [SCL], and pre‐ejection period [PEP]) of 123 preadolescents ( M age = 12.03 years) …
Youth’s Expectations for Their Teacher’s Handling of Peer Victimization and Their Socioemotional Development
Evidence suggests that children’s expectations for how their teacher responds to students’ aggression moderate concurrent links between peer victimization and adjustment. This study extends this work by examining these associations longitudinally. Youth ( N = 366; 196 girls; [Formula: see text]) reported on their teacher’s use of five responses to peer victimization, two reflecting active intervention and three reflecting passive responses. Physi…
Resting high-frequency heart rate variability moderates the association between early-life adversity and body adiposity
This study investigates resting high-frequency heart rate variability as a moderator of the association between early-life adversity and two measures of body adiposity. Data were collected from 149 young adults attending a large university in the Midwestern United States ( M age = 18.8 years; 45% black; 55% white; 56% female). Self-reported early-life adversity was associated with greater waist-to-height ratio and body mass index. The strength of…
Coping with peer victimization predicts peer outcomes across the transition to middle school
The present study examined strategies for coping with peer victimization as predictors of peer victimization experiences and broader peer relationship outcomes across the transition to middle school, and tested for possible gender differences in these associations. Participants included 123 early adolescents ( M age = 12.03 years at T1; 50% males; 58.5% European Americans, 35% African Americans, 6.5% of other races/ethnicities) who reported on st…
