This comparative study locates Frederick Douglass’s (1818–95) religiosity within his published autobiographies as well as his 1886–7 unpublished travel diary – taken as part of the Library of Congress’s Frederick Douglass Papers (1841–64). R-scripted text analysis of Douglass’s expressed faith is foregrounded through the generation of clean digital transcriptions using handwritten text recognition (HTR), the process of converting non-consistent i…
Are Digital Humanities platforms facilitating sufficient diversity in research? A study of the Transkribus Scholarship Programme
To what extent do Digital Humanities (DH) platforms support access to diverse user cohorts? We take, as a case study, the Automated Text Recognition (ATR) platform Transkribus and its Transkribus Scholarship Programme (TSP), which provides free processing credits to eligible users. Using a mixed methods approach we address the following questions: What are the demographics of those using the TSP scheme? What work is enabled by such a scheme? How …
St Sebastian

In more recent interpretations by historians, the arrows shot into St. Sebastian have been interpreted as foreign pathogens…
Understanding the application of handwritten text recognition technology in heritage contexts
Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) technology is now a mature machine learning tool, becoming integrated in the digitisation processes of libraries and archives, speeding up the transcription of primary sources and facilitating full text searching and analysis of historic texts at scale. However, research into how HTR is changing our information environment is scant. This paper presents a systematic literature review regarding how researchers are…
