A dependency-based analysis of the cognitive load of Chinese contracted sentences
Chinese contracted sentences are often viewed as a strategy to enhance processing efficiency, yet quantitative evidence for their syntactic and cognitive features remains limited. This study examines whether their dependency distance distributions (DDDs) follow Zipfian regularities and whether their mean dependency distances (MDDs) reflect reduced cognitive load. Using dependency grammar, three corpora of contracted sentences (parallel, causal, a…
Sentence voice preferences and sentiment patterns in gendered Weibo headlines on violent events
Drawing on Fairclough’s three-dimensional Critical Discourse Analysis framework, this study investigates gendered language differences in Weibo hot-search topics related to violent incidents between 2021 and 2024. We combine quantitative textual and sentiment analysis with discursive and socio-cultural interpretation to reveal these differences, and to uncover the possible motivations underlying them. The quantitative results reveal a consistent …

Tracing the shapes of adventure
Narrative, a common practice in human life, has long been a focus of humanities research. Advances in natural language processing have enabled us to delve deeper into narrative universals based on large-scale data. This study examines the emotional modes in 1,222 adventure stories from Project Gutenberg. Emotional arcs were extracted from these books, revealing six primary modes of emotional changes. To interpret these emotional modes, we analyze…
Humanities data in R
Exploratory data analysis (EDA), introduced by Tukey (1970), enables researchers to go beyond the raw data and uncovers underlying patterns and insights. As a result, it has become an essential tool in digital humanities (DH) studies, where the goal is to observe, describe, and interpret data within the context of humanities research (Evans and Rees 2012; Bod 2022; Yan, Li, and Liu 2024). Given the significance of EDA in DH studies, the book unde…
Defining digital humanities and examining its relationship with linguistics through the lens of Digital Scholarship in the Humanities
Digital humanities (DH) is an emerging interdisciplinary academic field that has gained prominence in recent decades. This study explores the evolution of topics, research impact, and attractiveness of DH through the lens of the journal Digital Scholarship in the Humanities (DSH), a leading platform for DH research, from 1986 to 2023 (in three phases: 1986–2003, 2004–2014, and 2015–2023). The study also examines the role of linguistic research in…
Basic word order typology revisited
This study quantitatively examines the first five universals of Greenberg’s basic word order typology based on 74 large-scale annotated corpora from two perspectives. The results show that (1) the dominant orders extracted from corpora concur with those retrieved from the World Atlas of Language Structures (henceforth, WALS ) and provide knowledge of dominant orders to languages absent in the WALS , demonstrating the feasibility of adopting corpo…
Revisiting English written VP-ellipsis and VP-substitution
The present study quantitatively investigates the structural features of English written VP-ellipsis (VPE) and VP-substitution (VPS) under the theoretical framework of dependency grammar. Results show that: (a) Both VPE and VPS are human language mechanisms that follow the least effort principle; (b) Dependency distance of segmental and discontinuous linguistic units under the influence of VPE and VPS conform to the right-truncated Zipf-Alekseev …
The development of phrase‐frames in EFL learners’ essays
Phrase‐frames (i.e., p‐frames) are a type of discontinuous formulaic language that have long been of interest to linguists in L2 writing research. Studies have explored p‐frames in different types of texts, but few have investigated p‐frames in learners’ essays, and it remains unclear at which level learners will begin to use p‐frames in native‐like ways. Drawing on a self‐compiled corpus of 1061 learner essays, this study explores the four‐word …
Semantic Roles or Syntactic Functions
The annotation scheme of dependency treebanks might have an impact on the results of linguistic analysis, thus leading to different interpretations of linguistic phenomena. This study compares the results of two widely used dependency measures, i.e., dependency direction and dependency distance, based on 18 parallel Universal Dependencies (UD) annotated treebanks and 18 corresponding Surface‐Syntactic Universal Dependencies (SUD) annotated treeba…
Morphology and word order in Slavic languages
Slavic languages are generally assumed to possess rich morphological features with free syntactic word order. Exploring this complexity trade-off can help us better understand the relationship between morphology and syntax within natural languages. However, few quantitative investigations have been carried out into this relationship within Slavic languages. Based on 34 annotated corpora from Universal Dependencies, this paper paid special attenti…
