Further education workforce wellbeing: Did Covid actually change anything
This paper considers wellbeing in the context of those working in the further education (FE) sector in England and how this has been affected by the Covid pandemic. There has been a growth of research into the impact of the pandemic on the workforce in the higher education sector and some considerations for schools. However, research that examines the FE sector's workforce, an education sector which is often considered under-resourced, can be lac…
Developing contextualised literature-informed competency frameworks for middle managers in education
The role of a manager within any organisation is often complex and multifaceted. Overtime management theory has developed in an effort to appreciate these complexities and suggest frameworks from which managers should operate. However, should management and the role of a manager be considered generic? Or, instead should we appreciate the distinctions dependant on the context in which a manager is operating in? This paper focuses on education midd…
Neo-androgynous management: Managing the English further education in an era of neoliberalism
The study draws on mixed methods research with further education middle managers across England in order to explore whether there are gendered differences in management. There remain debates about whether there are gender differences in management or leadership. The study adds to this debate with results that reveal that women and men are behaviourally flexible, employing a repertoire of knowledge, competencies and skills, which are not necessari…
Establishing professional expectations in further education middle management: The human resource manager’s perspective
The further education sector is a challenging working environment with expectations to deliver high-quality education against a backdrop of continuous policy and structural reforms. Further education managers play a key part in how further education institutions respond to this dynamic operating environment. However, despite the importance of this role there is an absence of an agreed set of professional expectations for further education middle …
Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and the evolutionary paradox of the polycystic ovary syndrome: A fertility first hypothesis
Worldwide, the high prevalence of the Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a heritable cause of ovarian infertility, is an evolutionary paradox, which provides insight into the susceptibility of well‐fed human populations to cardiovascular disease and diabetes. We propose that PCOS, Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and the Metabolic Syndrome are modern phenotypic expressions of a metabolic genotype attuned to the dietary and energetic conditions of the Pleisto…

In 1998, the British Medical Journal commemorated the 150th anniversary of the first Great Public Health Act.Christopher Hamlin was among the authors who reflected upon the achievements and contemporary relevance of the legacy of Edwin Chadwick and his contemporaries. In this lively and readable book, Hamlin develops the idea that public health in Britain in the first half of the 19th century involved two transforming questions.Firstly, how broad …

Air pollution and hospital admissions in Sydney, Australia, 1990 to 1994
OBJECTIVES: This study examined the effects of outdoor air pollutants on daily hospital admissions in Sydney, Australia. METHODS: A time-series analysis of counts of daily hospital admissions and outdoor air pollutants (1990 to 1994) was performed, by means of Poisson regression that allowed for overdispersion and autocorrelation. RESULTS: An increase in daily maximum 1-hour concentration of nitrogen dioxide from the 10th to the 90th percentile w…
Air pollution and daily mortality in Sydney, Australia, 1989 through 1993
OBJECTIVES: This study examined the effects of outdoor air pollutants in Sydney, Australia, on daily mortality. METHODS: Time-series analysis was performed on counts of daily mortality and major outdoor air pollutants (particulates, ozone, and nitrogen dioxide) in Sydney (1989 to 1993) with adjustment for seasonal and cyclical factors. Poisson regression was calculated with allowance for overdispersion and autocorrelation. The effects of lagging …
The health effects of swimming at Sydney beaches. The Sydney Beach Users Study Advisory Group
OBJECTIVES. The purpose of the study was to determine the health risks of swimming at ocean beaches in Sydney, Australia. METHODS. From people attending 12 Sydney beaches in the period from December 5, 1989 to February 26, 1990, we recruited a cohort of 8413 adults who agreed to participate in this study. Of these, 4424 were excluded either because they had been swimming in the previous 5 days or because they reported a current illness. Of the re…
