  • The iconic habit. The agency of networked images in social media

    Mateo Belgrano•ARTICLE•Visual Studies•2026

In the age of social media, we are accustomed to hearing about the uncontrollable visual ‘flood’ unleashed by new technologies. Metaphors such as ‘flood’, ‘wave’, or ‘ocean’ of images convey not only a sense of visual infinity but also of chaotic, unfiltered production. However, if we look more closely, we find that within this vast universe, visual forms tend to repeat themselves. This homogenisation is not neutral. The hypothesis we will defend…

  • Les Immatériaux

    Open Access•Mateo Belgrano•ARTICLE•Artnodes•2025

In 1983, the Centre Georges Pompidou invited Jean-François Lyotard, the prominent theorist of postmodernism, to organize an exhibition at the Centre de Création Industrielle. The exhibition Les Immatériaux examines the intersection of philosophical practice and curatorial craft. This article contends that Les Immatériaux should be regarded not just as an exhibition but as an artistic installation. According to Juliane Rebentisch, the key characte…

  • The curator’s cure – Curing visual stupidity in the age of symbolic misery

    Mateo Belgrano•ARTICLE•Educational Philosophy and Theory•2025•References: 9

Bernard Stiegler diagnoses that we live in societies of control under an aesthetic conditioning. Marketing emerges as the foundational force in societies of control, adept at shaping individual desires and cultivating them into consumerism. Capturing our attention, particularly through audiovisual mediums, dictates our behaviour. In essence, the industrial exploitation of consciousness diminishes our noetic abilities, turning us into stupid and d…

    Open Access•Mateo Belgrano•ARTICLE•Ideas y Valores•2024•References: 5

    Open Access•Mateo Belgrano•ARTICLE•ENDOXA•2022
