  • Nothing will tear us apart? Uncovering grammatical features of Polish interpretese with supervised learning models

    Marta Kajzer-Wietrzny, Agnieszka Chmiel et al.•ARTICLE•Perspectives•2025•References: 2

In this paper, we applied a data-driven approach to investigate unique grammatical characteristics of Polish interpreter discourse (interpretese) in the comparable Polish Interpreting Corpus (PINC). Following, in part, the previously adopted methodology, we first applied the Boruta feature selection method (Kursa & Rudnicki, 2010) to retrieve a set of dependency POS bigrams that allow differentiating between interpreted and non-interpreted langua…

  • Say Gesundheit to the Bagel -eating Paparazzi

    Open Access•Joanna Ryszka, Anna Stwora et al.•ARTICLE•English World-Wide A Journal of…•2025•References: 38

The paper explores the role of borrowings in Super Bowl commercials in the years 2019–2023 on the example of loanwords from seventeen languages in American English. Data analysis shows five distinctive topic categories according to the roles the borrowings play in the commercials studied. The analysis determines four main roles that fall into two categories: code-switching and intentional use of borrowings. It is possible to distinguish the borro…

  • Lexical frequency modulates current cognitive load, but triggers no spillover effect in interpreting

Agnieszka Chmiel, Przemysław Janikowski et al.•ARTICLE•Perspectives•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 10

This study analyses cognitive load in simultaneous interpreting on the basis of naturalistic data from the Polish Interpreting Corpus (PINC). We wanted to find evidence both for the current load (visible immediately after the exposure to the source text word) and the exported load (visible after the production of the translation equivalent in the target text). We operationalised cognitive load as disruptions in fluency, i.e., silent and filled pa…
