  • Legalized colonial displacement: Palestinians in Silwan, Jerusalem

    Open Access•Ahmad Amara, Oren Yiftachel•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning C…•2025•References: 16

The paper extends the study of urban displacement by exploring in depth the colonial settings of Palestinians in Silwan, East Jerusalem. The case highlights the legal geography of a multi-communal open city transformed into a space dominated by ethno-national settlement and a 'neo-apartheid' regime. The analysis traces how Jewish organizations reclaim pre-1948 Jewish properties, relying on manipulative interpretation of the Ottoman Land Code, and…

  • The Possession of History and the Dispossession of Silwan’s Palestinians

    Ahmad Amara•ARTICLE•Journal of Palestine Studies•2023•Cited by: 1

Since 1967, the slogan “restoring Jerusalem to its Jewish glory” has served as a rallying cry for the further colonization of the occupied eastern part of the city by the Israeli government and settler organizations alike. Jewish settlement in Jerusalem’s Palestinian neighborhoods invokes moral claims to Jewish sovereignty based on biblical history and material claims to pre-1948 properties of Jews in these neighborhoods. This essay examines Jewi…

  • The Bedouin Communities of Eastern Jerusalem: A New Locus of Power in the Post-Oslo Battle for Palestine

Ahmad Amara, Brendan Ciarán Browne et al.•ARTICLE•Confluences Méditerranée•2021•Cited by: 1

  • Emptied Lands: A Legal Geography of Bedouin Rights in the Negev

Open Access•Alexandre Kedar, Ahmad Amara et al.•BOOK•Emptied Lands•2018

It is commonly claimed by Israeli authorities that Bedouins are trespassers who never acquired property or settlement rights in southern Israel/Palestine. This led to massive dispossession of Bedouins. This book sets to examine state claims by providing, for the first time, a thorough analysis of the legal geography of the Negev. It adopts critical scholarly perspectives, drawing on multidisciplinary sources from geography, law, history and the s…

  • Civilizational Exceptions: Ottoman Law and Governance in Late Ottoman Palestine

    Open Access•Ahmad Amara•ARTICLE•Law and History Review•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 10

This article examines the Ottoman extension of rule and jurisdiction to the Beersheba frontier of southern Palestine. As part of its Tanzimat reform policies, the Ottoman administration founded the new town and sub-district of Beersheba in 1900, and sought to implement a legal reform. Deviating from the formal law that requires the founding of a civil-nizamiye court, the Ottoman instituted a form of legal exception and authorized the local admini…

This article explores the legal issues and policies surrounding Bedouin land ownership and dispossession in the Negev. By tracing the colonial legal trajectory-from Ottoman to British and finally, to the current Israeli adoption and development of legal doctrines-the author exposes an intricate manipulation of historical legal policies being used to further displace tens of thousands of Bedouin Arabs living in the Negev today.
