  • Tuberculosis in Cinematic Narratives

    Open Access•Deniz Avci•ARTICLE•sinecine Sinema Araştırmaları…•2024

Pulmonary tuberculosis has been prominent in representations of illness in theater and cinema since the beginning of the nineteenth century. Tuberculosis has served as a convenient vehicle for “romantic storytelling,” and the sanatorium as an ideal film set, one whose bucolic setting evokes in the audience a sense of escaping into nature. Focusing on three films—Una Breve Vacanza (A Brief Vacation, Vittorio De Sica, 1973), Učitel Tance (The Dance…

  • Transient yet Settled

    Open Access•Cansu Değirmencioğlu, Deniz Avci•ARTICLE•Res Mobilis•2023

Sanatoria designed for tuberculosis treatment aimed to allow patients to convalesce by two main approaches: by encouraging patients to become part of social/public life while learning to live with TB, and by softening the ‘hospital’ feeling by providing individualised rooms as spaces of convalescence. Despite their sterile appearances and clinical atmospheres, sanatoria were also emotionally charged spaces that aimed to convey a sense of belongin…

  • Building a Nation, Building a Modern Capital City

    Open Access•Deniz Avci, Giuseppe RESTA•ARTICLE•İDEALKENT•2021

Two capital cities, Tirana and Ankara, once united under the Ottoman banner, shared a similar urban development process ideologically and physically as they were designated the new capital cities under disparate national banners in 1920 and 1923 respectively. After the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire, both cities witnessed a non-negligible transformation. Their urban development occurred in a congruent fashion including urban components and …

    Open Access•Deniz Avci•ARTICLE•İDEALKENT•2020

Şehirlerde tarihi izlerin, yani geçmişi yeniden inşa etmek için gerekenlerin kalmadığı bir yapısal çevreyi hayal etmek acı vermektedir. Fakat, günümüzde şehirlerin hızla büyümesiyle birlikte tarihi kent merkezleri yeni inşa edilen bölgelerin arasında kalmış, unutulmuş ve terk edilmiş, dolayısıyla yapısal çevrenin bütünlüğü zarar görmüştür. Varlıklarını devam ettirmekte olan eski yapılar, sahiplerinin taleplerine zaman geçtikçe cevap vermekte yete…
