Dissenting from what? the rupture of Chilean teachers with the long-term consensus on teacher professional development
This article examines the division within Chile’s main teacher organisation caused by a dissident movement during the development of the new National Teaching Policy (PND), which occurred between the years 2014 and 2016. It focuses on the teachers’ collective awakening and the internal logic of neoliberal teacher policies. Through interviews and policy analysis, the study concludes that the dissident teacher movement has made visible the exclusio…
Media articulation and the stabilisation of teacher policies in Chile
This article explores the ideological articulation and stabilisation of educational reforms aimed at shaping teachers’ work in Chile. Focusing on teacher policies as an articulation through which state political projects are advanced, the article contributes to enhancing the cultural and structural dimensions of neoliberalism. More specifically, it builds from the tools of Corpus Linguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis to trace ideational sed…
In search of a global community: A multivocal critique of Unesco’s education commons discourse
This article critically examines UNESCO’s construction of a commons approach to global education through a multivocal analysis of its 2021 report Reimagining our futures together: a new social contract for education. The participating researchers’ “voices” are brought together through dialogue and joint meaning making to critically analyse UNESCO’s promotion of education as a global commons. This is achieved by unpacking how the “we” that this co…
Teachers’ politicity as a sociohistorical juncture: Bringing a Freirean angle to education policy studies
This paper engages with the Freirean concept of politicity for critical policy studies in education. The first part lays the ground to expand the conceptualisation of teachers’ politicity. I argue this entails an examination of the limits and possibilities within a juncture. To develop the argument, the second part focuses on a teacher strike that took place in Chile and draws on corpus-driven discourse analysis to explore news from a national te…
Bazaar, merchandise and decadence: Antonio José Ponte and Julián del Casal
The fascination of Latin American modernism for 19th century French fashion merchandise has been widely addressed in literary theory. Texts filled with diverse cultural materials, textures and objects configured a poetics of the bazaar that became part of a series of strategies through which Latin American literature defined and linked itself to hegemonic aesthetics of the 19th century. The poems and chronicles of Cuban writer Julián del Casal (1…
