  • Adolfo R. Posada. Métricos pinceles. Literatura y artes plásticas en el Siglo de Oro

    Maria Czepiel•ARTICLE•Calíope•2025

In this ambitious book, Posada sets out to give an overview of the relationship between art and literature in the literary production of the Spanish Golden Age. In his introduction, he explains the main innovations of the work: firstly, it broadens the scope of the topic beyond the traditional focus on ecphrasis (in its modern definition) and emblem literature, drawing on Classical and Renaissance rhetorical theory to include a wider range of tex…

  • Institutional and Popular Religion in Quevedo’s “Ya la obscura y negra noche”

    Maria Czepiel•ARTICLE•Calíope•2024

This study demonstrates the complex relationships between institutional religion and local, popular devotion in Quevedo’s poem “Ya la obscura y negra noche.” Through the application of the figure of Wisdom to Mary, Quevedo uses knowledge of liturgy and Scripture to dignify the local advocation of the church of Santa María de la Antigua in Valladolid. It also explores how this figure’s address to the local cofrades and encouragement of confraterna…

  • Horacio y Sannazaro en las dos odas inéditas de Garcilaso de la Vega

    Open Access•Maria Czepiel•ARTICLE•Bulletin Hispanique•2023•References: 17

    Maria Czepiel•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Hispanic Studies•2022

In this study I discuss the generic implications of Fray Luis’s adoption of the Horatian authorial persona. Firstly, I interpret Ode I as a statement of his poetic programme. Next, I argue that in Ode XXII Fray Luis navigates lyric’s apparent rejection of epic themes by modelling his portrayal of Pedro Portocarrero on Horace’s relationship with Maecenas. I then discuss how other elevated poems are compatible with the lyric persona through their a…

  • Two Newly Discovered Poems by Garcilaso de la Vega

    Open Access•Maria Czepiel•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Spanish Studies•2022•Cited by: 2

The Latin poetry of Garcilaso de la Vega was highly regarded by his contemporaries. However, until now, only three of his Latin lyric odes have been extant, and these are often disparaged by modern critics. In this study, I present two newly discovered poems by Garcilaso: the lyric-ode addressed to Bembo which the latter refers to in his correspondence, and another lyric-ode addressed to the poet Johann Alexander Brassicanus. I also present new c…

  • Garcilaso’s ‘Sedes ad cyprias’

    Maria Czepiel•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Spanish Studies•2019•Cited by: 3

Modern criticism has often neglected or been uncomplimentary about Garcilaso’s third Latin ode ‘Sedes ad cyprias’. This article presents a previously unidentified source for the poem, Erasmus’ translation of one of Lucian’s Dialogues of the Gods, and in the light of this offers a re-appraisal of Garcilaso’s poetic skill in the ode. Firstly, I discuss Garcilaso’s metrification and transformation of Erasmus’ prose translation. I go on to argue that…
