Infinities of Different Kinds
This study examines Bacon’s critique of the Unity of Matter Thesis (UMT) as articulated in his Opus maius. In this work, he refutes UMT using mathematical reasoning, particularly targeting its implication of material holenmerism. He argues that if prime matter were numerically identical across all things, it would possess infinite potency, which in turn necessitates an infinite essence. The latter would mean equating matter with God, a heretical …
Is Roger Bacon’s scientific practice scientific?
Argument The answer to the question, “Is Roger Bacon’s scientific practice scientific?” concerns an assessment of whether Bacon’s scientific practice exhibits traits of modern science. This paper uses the theoretical framework proposed by Hon and Goldstein (2023) for defining modern science, which identifies three salient, constitutive features: commitment, methodology and technique. These features function together as a skeleton of the argumenta…
Is interdisciplinarity a synonym for the search for alternative views of nature
Maxwell's role in turning the concept of model into the methodology of modeling
Law and Order natural regularities before the scientific revolution
The Optics of Giambattista Della Porta (ca. 1535–1615)
Natures’ and ‘Laws’
Introduction
Maxwell’s contrived analogy
Symmetry and asymmetry in electrodynamics from Rowland to Einstein
Unpacking “For Reasons of Symmetry”
Hermann Weyl succeeded in presenting a consistent overarching analysis that accounts for symmetry in (1) material artifacts, (2) natural phenomena, and (3) physical theories. Weyl showed that group theory is the underlying mathematical structure for symmetry in all three domains. But in this study Weyl did not include appeals to symmetry arguments which, for example, Einstein expressed as “for reasons of symmetry” ( wegen der Symmetrie; aus Symme…

A Critical Note on J. S. Mill's Classification of Fallacies
Towards a typology of experimental errors
Is There a Concept of Experimental Error in Greek Astronomy
The attempt to narrow the general discourse of the problem of error and to focus it on the specific problem of experimental error may be approached from different directions. One possibility is to establish a focusing process from the standpoint of history; such an approach requires a careful scrutiny of the history of science with a view to identifying the juncture when the problem of experimental error was properly understood and accounted for.…
