The Role of Enjoyment and Epistemic Emotions in Middle School AR Learning
When is observing failure productive? Investigating the role of solution diversity in vicarious failure
Prior research has shown that Productive Failure (PF), where learners attempt (and fail) to solve a problem prior to receiving instruction, is more effective for conceptual knowledge acquisition than receiving instruction first (Direct Instruction; DI). Higher diversity in generated solution attempts seemed positively associated with conceptual knowledge acquisition. The present study investigated whether observing another student’s attempts to s…

Do students learn more from failing alone or in groups? Insights into the effects of collaborative versus individual problem solving in productive failure
Productive Failure (PF) is an instructional design that implements a problem-solving phase which aims at preparing students for learning from a subsequent instruction. PF has been shown to facilitate students’ conceptual knowledge acquisition in the mathematical domain. Collaboration has been described as a vital design component of PF, but studies that have investigated the role of collaboration in PF empirically so far, were not able to confirm…
Reduced syntactic recursion in spontaneous speech of Parkinson's disease patients
Although characterized as a movement disorder, Parkinson's disease (PD) affects more than just the motor system. Within the heterogenous non-motor symptoms, language impairment is frequent but poorly understood beyond semantic processing. This study investigates the impact of PD on syntactic subordination in spontaneous language production. Fifteen PD patients in ON levodopa status narrated a short story guided by a set of pictures. Thirteen PD p…
Preparatory effects of problem solving versus studying examples prior to instruction
The Productive Failure (PF) approach prompts students to attempt to solve a problem prior to instruction – at which point they typically fail. Yet, research on PF shows that students who are involved in problem solving prior to instruction gain more conceptual knowledge from the subsequent instruction compared to students who receive the instruction first. So far, there is no conclusive evidence, however, that the beneficial effects of PF are exp…

A child is born in August 1941. A man dies in January 1942. He is the father of the child. They will never meet, because the world is at war. But both bear the same name: Konrad Jarausch. Years later, the son will examine what is left of his father: about 350 Feldpostbriefe, letters from the war which had been kept in an old leather suitcase. He will select, comment and edit them. The result is the book reviewed here. The author of these letters,…

Organizational learning in clusters
Steiner M. and Hartmann C. (2006) Organizational learning in clusters: a case study on material and immaterial dimensions of cooperation, Regional Studies 40, 493–506. The aim of the paper is to give empirically based insights into forms and mechanisms of knowledge management and learning within clusters. Taking the case of five specific clusters from the Austrian province of Styria, the paper looks at differences in their learning behaviour. Bas…
