  • Situating the oil contradiction on a global scale: The case of modern Libya (1951–1980s)

    Open Access•Matteo Capasso, R Biasillo•ARTICLE•Review of African Political Economy•2026•References: 3

This article argues that, in order to study the role of oil as a primary contradiction determining the mode of social reproduction of a global South country, it is fundamental to understand the role that oil has played in consolidating the US-led global order after the Second World War. Moving beyond methodological nationalism and regime type theories – especially rentier state theory – the article focuses on the case of modern Libya (1951 to the…

  • Mussolini's Nature: An Environmental History of Italian Fascism

    Marco Armiero, R Biasillo et al.•BOOK•Mussolini's Nature•2022

This exploration of the environmental practices of Benito Mussolini's fascist regime invites readers to consider the ecological connections of all political projects. In this first environmental history of Italian fascism, Marco Armiero, Roberta Biasillo, and Wilko Graf von Hardenberg reveal that nature and fascist rhetoric are inextricable. Mussolini's Nature explores fascist political ecologies, or rather the practices and narratives through wh…

  • Rooting Out Injustices from the Top

    Lise Sedrez, R Biasillo•ARTICLE•Social Text•2022

The article illustrates the reemergence of the Atlantic Forest biome in Morro da Babilônia, a favela in Rio de Janeiro, due to a reforestation project started in the 1980s conducted by institutional actors and the local community. The forest has played an important role in reinvigorating the sense of community, by legitimizing ownership claims that the community has made over the area, and by serving as a mitigation strategy in a context of incre…

  • Urban Climate Insurgency

Ashley Dawson, Marco Armiero et al.•ARTICLE•Social Text•2022

Urban climate insurgency refers to the ensemble of grassroots initiatives aiming to tackle climate change from a radical point of view. Insurgency in this case does not imply violence but rather refers to the radical rejection of the current socioecological system. While explicitly challenging planetary ecocide and climate-change effects, these forms of insurgency target all policies that make the urban condition yet more precarious, demonstratin…

  • La Val d’Orcia da paesaggio storico a paesaggio estetico

    R Biasillo•ARTICLE•Public History Weekly•2021

Tuscany’s hills are the quintessential example of an Italian landscape in which humans, nature and history combine in the best possible way. In this context, the beautiful countryside of the Val d’Orcia has featured in artistic representations across the centuries and was declared a UNESCO heritage site in 2004. This contribution discusses the limits and potential of such prestigious recognition. This article argues that an historically-informed …

  • Socio-ecological colonial transfers: Trajectories of the Fascist agricultural enterprise in Libya (1922–43)

    Open Access•R Biasillo•ARTICLE•Modern Italy•2021

This paper intertwines the two historiographical concerns of migration and colonialism by exploring the case of Italian rule in North Africa from 1922 to 1943 and by adopting the analytic ground of the environment. The role played by the environment in targeting and shaping specific social groups, forming and grounding specific policies, creating and preventing social and natural transfers, has been overshadowed until now, particularly in relatio…

  • Environments of Italianness: For an environmental history of Italian migrations

Open Access•R Biasillo, Claudio De Majo et al.•ARTICLE•Modern Italy•2021•References: 7

Italian mobility played a fundamental part in the history of the peninsula, since it was a global phenomenon reaching every continent except Antarctica. The Italian diaspora counted over 26 million expatriates who left the country between 1876 and 1976 and, to date, Italy remains one of the states that has contributed the most to the Great European Migration. Although impressive, these figures do not take into account pre-unitary Italian mobiliti…

  • The Very Grounds Underlying Twentieth-Century Authoritarian Regimes: Building Soil Fertility in Italian Libya and the Brazilian Cerrado

Open Access•R Biasillo, Claiton Márcio Da Silva•ARTICLE•Comparative Studies in Society…•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 2

This article analyzes the role of soil in the making of authoritarian regimes and illustrates twentieth-century practices and discourses related to fertility across the globe. It compares two different approaches to and understandings of soil fertility: the first emerged in North Libya under Italian Fascist rule (1922-1943), the second in Central Brazil during the civil-military dictatorship (1964-1985). We compare two soil-forming processes that…

This paper compares two schemes of agrarian transformation that occurred during World War Two in Libya and northeast Brazil, undertaken by the Italian fascist regime and US private and governmental officials respectively. Although developing different historical trajectories, these similar efforts aiming to convert desert and semi-arid areas into productive fields intertwined with military services and reflected colonial and post-colonial appropr…

  • Seeing the Nation for the Trees: At the Frontier of Italian Nineteenth-Century Modernity

    Open Access•R Biasillo, Marco Armiero•ARTICLE•Environment and History•2018•Cited by: 1

In this article we analyse the emergence and the transformation of three different socio-natural spaces in a particular historical context - that is, the establishment of a modern state. We explore this issue by researching the relationship between forests and modernisation from Unification in 1861 to the 1890s. Over this period Italy experienced a radical change connected with the state-building process, and forests represented a material place …
