It then explains the fiscal decisions taken by member countries, as well as the monetary policy pursued by the European Central Bank.
An Analysis of the Convergence of the Composition of Public Expenditures in E uropean U nion Countries
The literature on fiscal policies is paying increasing attention to the impact of the composition of public expenditures on long‐term economic growth. Public policy endogenous growth models recommend to change the composition of public expenditures to items considered productive expenditures. In this sense, E uropean institutions are encouraging the rise in the share of productive outlays like public investments, R&D , and active labor market pol…
The Economic Crisis in Spain: Contagion Effects and Distinctive Factors
Since the year 2008, the Spanish economy has been immersed in the deepest crisis of its history. From being one of the most dynamic European economies in the decade of the 2000s, Spain has moved to be a nearly stagnant economy whose short-term prospects are far from being optimistic, clearly worse than those of most European countries. The aim of the chapter is to provide an explanation of the bad performance of Spain’s economy since 2008. In thi…
Has Capital Account Liberalization in Latin American Countries Led to Higher and More Stable Capital Inflows
Arguments for capital account liberalization are based on the presumed positive consequences on the economic growth of liberalizing economies. On the basis of those arguments, most Latin American countries have been engaged in intense domestic and international financial liberalization processes during the last two decades. However, the existence of a push in favor of economic growth from capital account liberalization is conditional on higher ca…
The economic policy in Spain during the decades of the 1980s and the 1990s
Over the past two decades there has been a prevailing shift in economic policy in many countries. This reflects the continuing rise of neo-liberalism – the doctrine that economic policy should ‘leave it to the market’ and that governments should retreat from market intervention. This book provides a balanced and comprehensive appraisal of these important policy developments. The authors examine the most notable trends in neo-liberal economic poli…
The Spanish Labour Market: Reforms and consequences
The institutional design of the Spanish labour market has been subjected, during the last three decades, to permanent pressure fuelled by two beliefs. On the one hand, by the assumption that a higher degree of flexibility would help to reduce unemployment; on the other, by the assumption that such increased flexibility would also help to reduce inflation rates and, consequently, the inflation gap between Spain and the rest of the European countri…
