  • Epistemic Normativity from an Evolutionary Epistemological Point of View

Open Access•Andreas Stephens, Cathrine V Felix et al.•ARTICLE•Erkenntnis•2026

This paper explores how evolutionary epistemology can offer insights into the discussion of naturalization of epistemology and normativity. Living organisms have an inherent disposition to continue living – i.e., staying in homeostasis – which they accomplish through an anticipatory regulatory process called allostasis. Organisms only survive under certain conditions, and so their actions and predictions need to be “good enough” for the organism,…

  • A Naturalistic Theory of (In)justice

    Open Access•Shervin Mirzaeighazi, Trond A Tjøstheim•ARTICLE•Journal for the Theory of Social…•2026•References: 66

Across different domains, justice is considered either from a perspective concerning mind‐independent features of a situation or from a perspective related to mind‐dependent motives, traits or emotions. Although these approaches have generated valuable insights, they remain largely disconnected from each other. What is missing is an integrative framework that can explain how the objective features of situations are translated into subjective expe…

  • Expressing Robot Emotion Using Eye Colors, Pupil Sizes, Eye Direction and Head Postures

Open Access•Betty Tärning, Trond A Tjøstheim et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2025

At the current time, social robots are poised to enter human society in an unprecedented way. However, robots currently are not adept at communicating emotional states, even if humans to a large extent rely on such communication to regulate interaction. Although facial expressions are difficult for robots to make use of, colored lights are readily available. Currently though, there is no consensus on how to best represent emotions using colors in…

  • Intelligence as Accurate Prediction

Open Access•Trond A Tjøstheim, Andreas Stephens•ARTICLE•Review of Philosophy and Psychology•2022

This paper argues that intelligence can be approximated by the ability to produce accurate predictions. It is further argued that general intelligence can be approximated by context dependent predictive abilities combined with the ability to use working memory to abstract away contextual information. The flexibility associated with general intelligence can be understood as the ability to use selective attention to focus on specific aspects of sen…

  • The Cognitive Philosophy of Reflection

    Open Access•Andreas Stephens, Trond A Tjøstheim•ARTICLE•Erkenntnis•2022

Hilary Kornblith argues that many traditional philosophical accounts involve problematic views of reflection (understood as second-order mental states). According to Kornblith, reflection does not add reliability, which makes it unfit to underlie a separate form of knowledge. We show that a broader understanding of reflection, encompassing Type 2 processes, working memory, and episodic long-term memory, can provide philosophy with elucidating inp…

  • The Cognitive Philosophy of Communication

Open Access•Trond A Tjøstheim, Andreas Stephens et al.•ARTICLE•Philosophies•2020

Numerous species use different forms of communication in order to successfully interact in their respective environment. This article seeks to elucidate limitations of the classical conduit metaphor by investigating communication from the perspectives of biology and artificial neural networks. First, communication is a biological natural phenomenon, found to be fruitfully grounded in an organism’s embodied structures and memory system, where spec…
