  • Baha'i-inspired Educational Endeavors and Social Justice

    Open Access•Ilya Zrudlo, Ashraf Rushdy•ARTICLE•The Journal of Bahá’í Studies•2026

Bahá’í-inspired educational endeavors naturally seek, among other aims, to instill capacity in young people to build a more just society. Other educational efforts in North America share this aim, which is often expressed using the term “social justice.” This paper analyses conceptions of authority, freedom, power, equality, and identity that are mobilized in the context of educational endeavors associated with the aim of social justice. Some of …

  • Reintegrating philosophy more effectively into initial teacher education

    Open Access•Ilya Zrudlo•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Education /…•2025

The role of philosophy has gradually been minimized in initial teacher education (ITE) despite the benefits it can bring to teachers. One of the reasons it has been marginalized is because of the way it was being offered. I outline some relatively neglected critiques R. S. Peters laid out against the historical survey method of teaching philosophical foundations, as well as some of his suggestions for how to integrate philosophy of education into…

  • The ethical and educational ambiguities of teacher leadership

    Ilya Zrudlo•ARTICLE•Educational Philosophy and Theory•2025•References: 30

The literature on teacher leadership tends to omit mention of the dark side of leadership. This is troubling since, after all, examples of bad leaders come readily to mind. This paper delves into the literature on bad leadership, illuminating it with reference to Iris Murdoch’s moral psychology, to elaborate an explanation as to why leaders often go bad. This framework is then applied to teacher leadership in order to lay out certain ethical and …

  • Iris Murdoch and moral education

    Ilya Zrudlo•ARTICLE•Journal of Moral Education•2023

This article takes up three interrelated elements of Iris Murdoch’s moral philosophy into an initial conceptual framework for moral education and explores a practical application of this framework to a lesson plan. The three elements are moral vocabulary, moral perception, and the quality of our states of consciousness. The framework constituted by these three elements suggests that moral education should enrich the moral vocabulary of students, …

    Open Access•Ilya Zrudlo•ARTICLE•Teaching and Teacher Education•2023•References: 3

  • A Transitional Conception of Modernity for Education

    Open Access•Ilya Zrudlo•ARTICLE•Educational Theory•2022

In this article, Ilya Zrudlo unpacks the educationally limiting effects of conflicting visions of the good embedded in Western modernity and offers a developmental vision of modernity for education that is more coherent and productive of student agency. Drawing on Charles Taylor's work, Zrudlo disarticulates four aspects of Western modernity — economic modernization, the struggle for justice, individualism, and naturalism — and highlights the int…

  • Moving beyond rationalistic responses to the concern about indoctrination in moral education

    Open Access•Ilya Zrudlo•ARTICLE•Theory and Research in Education•2021

Indoctrination is an ongoing concern in education, especially in debates about moral education. One approach to this issue is to come up with a rational procedure that can robustly justify potential items of moral education content. I call this the ‘rationalistic justification project’. Michael Hand’s recent book, A Theory of Moral Education, is representative of this approach. My essay has three parts. First, I show that Hand’s justificatory pro…

  • Human kinds in education

    Open Access•Ilya Zrudlo•ARTICLE•Journal of Philosophy of Education•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 8

How should we assess the variety of ideas students encounter in education about the kinds of people they ought to be? What kind of people should students be educated to become? In this essay, I argue that the line of thought opened up by David Bakhurst's recent work offers a philosophically robust way to approach the twofold project of (1) analysing existing ‘human kinds’ promoted in education and (2) discovering and elaborating a more adequate a…
