  • Is It Possible Not to Speak Disparagingly to a Basket of Deplorables? A Critique of Menno ter Braak

    Sjoerd Van Tuinen•ARTICLE•Cultural Politics an International…•2025•References: 2

As the post-2016 boom in the self-diagnostics of toxic liberalism shows, the concept of ressentiment is still one of today's main “ideologemes.” While having a morally disqualifying power, it offers no way out of the political impasse it describes. The author proposes a critique of the 1937 essay by the Dutch writer Menno ter Braak, “National Socialism as a Doctrine of Rancor,” as the basis for a wider critique of “pastoral” discourses on ressent…

  • Philosophy of Mannerism: From Aesthetics to Modal Metaphysics

    Sjoerd Van Tuinen•BOOK•Philosophy of Mannerism•2022

Sjoerd van Tuinen argues for the inseparability of matter and manner in the form of a group portrait of Leibniz, Bergson, Whitehead, Souriau, Simondon, Deleuze, Stengers, and Agamben. Examining afresh the 16th-century style of mannerism, this book synthesizes philosophy and aesthetics to demonstrate not only the contemporary relevance of artists such as Michelangelo or Arcimboldo but their broader significance as incorporating a form of modal thi…

  • The Philosophy of Mannerism: From Aesthetics to Modal Metaphysics

    Sjoerd Van Tuinen•BOOK•Philosophy of Mannerism•2022

Examining afresh the 16th-century style of mannerism, Sjoerd van Tuinen synthesises philosophy and aesthetics to demonstrate not only the contemporary relevance of mannerism but its broader significance as a form of modal thinking. Beyond a style of art that spurned the balance and proportion of earlier Renaissance painting in favour of compositional instability and tension, this book looks a-historically at mannerism to investigate what it can t…

  • Authentic Ressentiment: The Polemics of Jean Améry

    Sjoerd Van Tuinen•ARTICLE•Philosophy Today•2021

Following Nietzsche, we can discern two types of therapeutical voice on ressentiment, which find themselves in a polemical relation to one another: The philosopher and the priest. In this paper, I turn to a third polemical voice, embodied by Jean Améry, namely that of the victim who bears witness to his own ressentiment. A dialectical reconstruction of this standpoint within the polemical triangle contributes to the Améry reception in three ways:…

  • The resentment-ressentiment complex: A critique of liberal discourse

    Sjoerd Van Tuinen•ARTICLE•Global Discourse•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 12

This article offers a critique of a widespread political discourse that distinguishes ‘resentment’ from ‘ressentiment’, legitimating the former and dismissing the latter. This distinction not only incorporates some reactive sentiments at the cost of the depoliticisation of others, but also obscures the conditions of political action and judgement as such. Why is it necessary to constantly protect the socio-political order from the risk of moral c…

  • Philosophy in the Light of Ai: Hegel or Leibniz

    Open Access•Sjoerd Van Tuinen•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Philosophy already has a long history of coming to terms with artificial intelligence (AI). But if the future of the concept is indeed inseparable from artificial languages and ubiquitous computing, then philosophy must also be able to understand and rewrite its own history in this unnatural light. To this end, I distinguish two manners in which modern philosophy has pursued the artificial cultivation of intelligence. The first is Hegelian. Recen…

  • Mannerism, Baroque, and Modernism: Deleuze and the Essence of Art

    Sjoerd Van Tuinen•ARTICLE•SubStance•2014

Mannerism, Baroque, and Modernism:Deleuze and the Essence of Art Sjoerd van Tuinen (bio) Going by the titles of his books, Deleuze has proposed two philosophical concepts for styles from art history: Expressionism and the Baroque. It is true that he discusses many other notions from the history of style, but these are the only ones that are truly made to “exist in themselves.” Or might there be a third, buried like a wedge between its two neighbo…

  • Michelangelo, Leibniz and the Serpentine Figure

    Open Access•Sjoerd Van Tuinen•ARTICLE•Deleuze Studies•2011

In his lectures from 1987, Deleuze draws an analogy between Michelangelo's figures and Leibnizian substances by claiming that neither are essences but rather sources of modifications or manners of being. The best way to explore this analogy, I argue, is by focusing on Michelangelo's preference for serpentine shapes. By putting key passages from The Logic of Sensation, The Fold: Leibniz and the Baroque and What is Philosophy? in resonance with the…

  • Air Conditioning Spaceship Earth: Peter Sloterdijk's Ethico-Aesthetic Paradigm

    Open Access•Sjoerd Van Tuinen•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning D…•2009•Cited by: 7•References: 3

This paper explores the convergence of anthropology and ecology in the recent work of Peter Sloterdijk. Firstly, it is argued that Sloterdijk proposes an important new interpretation of Heideggerian Gelassenheit for which I propose the English word 'relief. The concept of relief rests on the substitution of ontological difference by what I propose to call 'natal' or 'natural' difference. Secondly, I will develop the significance of these concepts…

  • Critique Beyond Resentment: An Introduction to Peter Sloterdijk’s Jovial Modernity

    Sjoerd Van Tuinen•ARTICLE•Cultural Politics an International…•2007•Cited by: 6•References: 1

This essay serves as an introduction both to this special issue and to the works of Peter Sloterdijk. It starts out from the opposition between the critical and the affirmative projects in modern philosophy. It is my intent to demonstrate how Sloterdijk displaces this opposition in favor of what I propose to call a “jovial modernity” and a post-Heideggerian philosophy of Gelassenheit or “relief.” After a general outline of the Sphären-project, I …
