  • ‘Trzciniec’ pottery from Żanęcin, Otwock district, as an example of southern cultural influence in the Masovian Lowlands

Adam Wawrusiewicz, D Manasterski et al.•ARTICLE•Światowit•2025

The Trzciniec Culture and Eastern Trzciniec Culture, or in more general terms the phenomena jointly known as the Trzciniec-Komarów-Sośnica Cultural Complex or the Trzciniec Cultural Sphere, are culturally heterogeneous Bronze Age communities dated to between ca. 1900 BC and ca. 1000 BC, inhabiting large swathes of Central-Eastern Europe. The only cultural marker enabling relatively reliable identification of the said communities is their characte…

  • Three lines of ditches and embankments and inside a void

    Open Access•Krzysztof Żurek, Adam Wawrusiewicz•ARTICLE•Sprawozdania Archeologiczne•2025•References: 12

Airborne LiDAR surveys have identified 27 Late Bronze and Early Iron Age fortified sites in the valleys of the Biebrza and Narew rivers in northern Podlasie, sharing similar locations, forms, and dimensions. In 2019, interdisciplinary geomagnetic and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys, followed by excavations, were carried out on the site in Kościuki (Białystok district). The site lies on a sandy elevation near a peat bog and consists of three…

  • Settlement patern of Lusatian culture in Podlasie (NE Poland) and man-environment interaction

Krzysztof Żurek, Tomasz Kalicki et al.•ARTICLE•Praehistorische Zeitschrift•2023•Cited by: 2

Three sites from network of 27 structures of the Late Bronze/Early Iron Age Lusatian culture from NE Poland (Biebrza and Narew river basins) and man-environment interaction were study. These circular structures have a relatively uniform location, structure, type of construction and dimension. Two areas within these structure coud be distinguished: a protective area consisting of a system of ditches and embankments and a central area consisting of…

  • Fortece na bagnach”. Pierwsze interdyscyplinarne badania stanowiska z późnej epoki brązu w Jatwiezi Dużej (Polska północno-wschodnia)

Open Access•Krzysztof Żurek, Adam Wawrusiewicz et al.•ARTICLE•Folia Praehistorica Posnaniensia•2022

The phenomenon of functioning of fortified settlements of late Bronze Age and early Iron Age in northern Podlasie (North-Eastern Poland) is a relatively new research problem, on which the knowledge is a result of research conducted in the last several years. The aim of the paper is to present the preliminary results of the interdisciplinary research of the Jatwieź Duża site (district of Suchowola, Sokółka County, Podlaskie voivodeship). The resea…

  • The transmission of pottery technology among prehistoric European hunter-gatherers

    Open Access•E V Dolbunova, Alexandre Lucquin et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2022•Cited by: 9•References: 74

Human history has been shaped by global dispersals of technologies, although understanding of what enabled these processes is limited. Here, we explore the behavioural mechanisms that led to the emergence of pottery among hunter-gatherer communities in Europe during the mid-Holocene. Through radiocarbon dating, we propose this dispersal occurred at a far faster rate than previously thought. Chemical characterization of organic residues shows that…

  • Bell Beaker Cultural Package in the East European Periphery of the Phenomenon

Open Access•D Manasterski, Katarzyna Januszek et al.•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2020•Cited by: 3

The Bell Beaker (BB) cultural package is one of the concepts explaining the extensive diffusion of this phenomenon in Europe. Artefacts associated with the package, discovered mainly in the graves of men, form groups defining the status of the deceased. The BB package is a dynamic turn of events, changing depending on the region, but preserving certain characteristic traits. The complete set of its initial ingredients was not copied in any locati…

  • A Ritual Feature with Bell Beaker Elements in a Late Neolithic Hunter-Gatherer Campsite in North-Eastern Poland

Open Access•D Manasterski, Katarzyna Januszek et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Archaeology•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 1

The ephemeral nature of religious practices and rituals makes them challenging to trace in the archaeological record of Late Neolithic hunter-gatherer communities in central and eastern Europe. A ritual feature with Bell Beaker elements discovered in north-eastern Poland, a region occupied by hunter-gatherer groups of the Neman cultural circle, is thus exceptional. Its syncretic character indicates its role as a harbinger of wider cultural change…

  • Andrzej Michałowski, Jakub Niebieszczański, Milena Teska, Patrycja Kaczmarska, Non-invasive magnetometric prospection in forested area

Open Access•Andrzej Michałowski, Jakub Niebieszczański et al.•ARTICLE•PLURAL History Culture Society•2019

The following article concerns the results of a combined non-invasive and invasive fieldworks in Mirosław, site 37 (Piła county, Wielkopolska voivodeship, Northern Poland). The site is a Wielbark culture barrow cemetery located in a forested area, thus limiting it access to a variety of methods. With the usage of a single-sonde gradientometer it was possible to survey the site by the means of magnetometry. The magnetic map of the site indicated p…

The discussion about the periodization of the „Trzciniec” phenomena in Poland arose due to wide-scale rescue excavations which were carried out in recent years. The main source of these analyses is a study on a large series of artifacts from site 1 at Polesie, Łyszkowice commune, Lodz voivodeship, identified on the route of the A2 motorway building (cf. monograph – Górski, Makarowicz, Wawrusiewicz 2011). The site under consideration is situated o…
