Absolute dating of the Early/Pre-state Medieval date burial features in Muntenia (the 7th–14th century AD)
Our aim here is to firstly address the burial dynamics preceding the establishment of the medieval state south of the Carpathians from the view of absolute dating. In order to achieve this undertaking, we have taken samples from burial features spanning a period of more than seven centuries (the 7th–14th century) and delivered these for investigation with several laboratories. From the ‘Avars’ to ‘proto-Bulgarians’, ‘Pechenegs’ to the ‘Late Cuman…
Dating grave no. 97 from Vălcani in the light of numismatic and radiocarbon research – contributions to the chronology of H.1
Prahova / Nomads and nomadism in the Romanian Plain? The 10th–12th burials of Cioceni – Burial Mound (Pr…
From the Central Region towards the peripheries. A chronological analysis of a prestige good – the mount ornamented sabretache
Asymmetrical relationship between a peripheral region and the Late Avar Khaganate
Altogether, nine sites dated to the 7th/8–9th/10th centuries have been recorded during planned and rescue excavations and fieldwalking campaigns in the Sighișoara microregion, which lies in the inner part of the Transylvanian Basin, almost at the centre of a distinct geological and tectonic unit. Only four of these have been excavated (Sighișoara-Weinberg / Dealul Viilor: ‘Settlement / Siedlung’, and ‘Funerary site / Gräberfeld’, Albești-Cetățea,…
Pedeapsă după moarte? Cazul mormântului 239 de la Pecica – Situl 15. Death punishment? The case of burial 239 from Pecica – Site 15
A 7., illetve 10–11. század Valkány temetőinek előzetes elemzése a kutatás e szakaszának legfontosabb előkövetkeztetéseit összegzi, különös tekintettel a temetőkben nyugvó népesség eredetére, kulturális kapcsolatrendszerére és a migráció lehetőségeire. A temetkezésekből ismert tárgyi kultúra alapján az első, 37 sírt tartalmazó temetkezési hely a 7. század második harmadára, míg a második a 10. század utolsó évtizedeitől a 11. század 70-es éveiig …

Rescue excavation from Pecica-Duvenbeck from the year 2018 unearthed 582 complexes related to various periods, among them two groups of graves datable in the 7/8‒9th centuries. In a grave, complex no. 20A, there has been identified a pot, which has under the throat an incised cross sign. The skeleton, partially disturbed at the time of its robbery, seems to have been a woman adultus/maturus, with an estimated age of over 30 years. Besides present…

Dietary and cultural differences between neighbouring communities
Stable isotope (δ15N, δ13C) and 14C results from two early medieval cemeteries are presented and evaluated in this study in order to draw conclusions about diet, social differentiation and chronology in the Carpathian Basin during the Avar period (7th–9th century CE). At Tiszafüred and Hortobágy, two contemporaneous but distinct groups buried their deceased. The results reflect basic diet deviations between the two communities, which originated i…
The Outskirts of the Khagan”. The first “Avar” conquerors in the lower Mureş in light of the graves from Pecica “Est/Smart Diesel”
The archaeological rescue excavation near Pecica resulted in the unearthing of nine graves with scant grave goods, which, on the basis of the aspects of the funerary ritual and 14C analyses, could be dated to the period between the second part of the 6th century and first part of the 7th century. Taking into account the fact that these graves were dispersed over a very large territory (cca 1.8 ha), at a distance of dozens of meters from one anoth…
The graves of Pecica-Rovine/Căprăvanul Mic, and distribution networks of amber and personal adornments in the 6th and 7th centuries
Two graves, with altogether four skeletons, discovered near Pecica and buried in W–E orientation, offer us the possibility of a more nuanced analysis of the cultural realities of the groups of people living in the Trans-Tisza region in the 6th and 7th centuries. However, the amber and earring finds allow us to contemplate communication networks in the early Avar Age and their significant transformation by the late Avar period. Placing these trans…
A (Needle) Case in Point
In the late Avar period (eighth to ninth century ad ), vast quantities of utilitarian artefacts were produced in series in the Carpathian Basin, a phenomenon not seen since the end of the Roman period. The distribution of these articles reflects not only the region's settlement pattern, but also how these artefacts were disseminated. The communication network in the Carpathian Basin underwent a significant transformation between the early and lat…
The problem of “structural integration”. A case study of the 9th‒10th century burials (Graves 49 and 50) at Hortobágy – Árkus
Archaeological discoveries linked to the “first generation” of the Avar conquerors living east of the Tisa during the 6th-7th centuries. The grave cluster in Nădlac - Site 1M
Four graves were excavated on site 1M at Nădlac. They could be dated to the the second part of the 6th century and the first part of the 7th century AD. Based on the 14C analysis, grave 86 can most probably be dated between 532 and 609 AD. This result indicates that the woman inhumed in the grave, aged 40-55 years, was very probably an immigrant who came from the East. The funerary rituals documented on site 1M in Nădlac can fit within the repert…
On the “Mobility” of Symbols. The Sign of the Cross Found on a Pot from a Grave at Pecica-Duvenbeck
Interpreting grave goods always poses a challenge to the archaeologist; objects in the grave and their position serve as the main basis to draw conclusions about associated rituals and belief systems, and to explain how and why a weapon, a horse harness or a ceramic vessel was buried beside the dead. Interpreting symbols used in various religions and found on objects recovered from Avar period graves is even more difficult as no written accounts …

Archaeology and Nationalism. the Endless Struggle for Dăbâca (G
The excavation of Dăbâca castle started in the early 1960s. The contextualization of the results was heavily influenced by ideological preconceptions since the fortification was identified as the political-military centre of legendary “lord Gelou” by archaeologists, based on the material of only three seasons of archaeological research and a written source from a much later period. According to the archaeological and numismatic finds, the fortifi…
