The Effectiveness of Psychiatric Day Centres
Day centres provide low-threshold support for people with severe and prolonged mental illness. However, their effectiveness has not yet been empirically evaluated. This study examines whether regular attendance at day centres improves mental health outcomes. Two surveys were conducted: a cross-sectional survey of 87 service users and a longitudinal study of 16 new admissions (assessments at baseline, one month, and three months after admission). …
Leisure Activities of Service Users in Psychiatric Rehabilitation– An Overlooked Avenue for Social Inclusion? Results from a Comparative Cross-Sectional Survey
Leisure engagement plays a crucial role in people's health. Although the effects of physical activity on mental health have been studied extensively, social leisure activities have been neglected so far. This study compares leisure satisfaction, behaviour and perceived barriers of 110 service users of sheltered workshops to those of 40 mental health professionals (MHPs). It examines factors associated with greater leisure satisfaction using a cro…
Persisting unhealthy eating behaviors and the role of dieting in outpatients treated for severe mental illness
Background: Individuals living with severe mental illness (SMI) are at higher risk of being overweight and obese. In addition to medication side effects, poor dietary habits are considered as modifiable factors. However, individuals with SMI face a variety of barriers to healthy eating, and it is still unclear which dietary strategies are best. Aims: The current study aimed to examine the course of dietary habits in dieting and non-dieting patien…
Knowledge and attitude towards home treatment among referring healthcare professionals and self-referring patients to a psychiatric hospital
BACKGROUND: Home treatment (HT) is a patient-centred and cost-effective alternative to acute psychiatric inpatient care. However, the progress of its implementation and utilisation in routine care is slow. AIMS: The aim of this study was to examine the knowledge and attitude towards HT among healthcare professionals. METHOD: This observational study included telephone-based semi-structured interviews of 140 referring healthcare professionals incl…
Independent Supported Housing for Non-homeless People With Serious Mental Illness
ClinicalTrials.gov, identifier: NCT03815604, December 04, 2019
Nutritional Needs in Mental Healthcare
The described study will identify nutritional needs and possible barriers to healthy eating in patients with mental disorders. The results will help to define recommendations for nutritional risk screening in psychiatric patients and for planning effective nutritional interventions
Independent Supported Housing for non-homeless individuals with severe mental illness
Participants were comparable in both study sites. However, there were significant problems in conducting the RCT because of strong preferences for ISH. The OS with propensity score methods provided results of more stable groups of participants and revealed balanced samples and valid outcome analysis. Our results do not support further investment in RCTs in this field
Assessment of Nutritional Status and Risk of Malnutrition Using Adapted Standard Tools in Patients with Mental Illness and in Need of Intensive Psychiatric Treatment
People with severe mental illness (SMI) are often in poor physical health, resulting in higher mortality and reduced life expectancy compared to the general population. Although eating habits are one of the main predictors of physical health, few studies assess the nutritional status and eating behavior of people with SMI. The aim of this study was to examine the nutritional status and risk of malnutrition in people with SMI who were in need of i…
Independent Supported Housing Versus Institutionalised Residential Rehabilitation for Individuals with Severe Mental Illness
Despite widespread support for Independent Supported Housing (ISH) interventions, psychiatric housing rehabilitation still commonly takes place in residential care facilities (RCFs). This study compares preferences, attitudes and working conditions of mental healthcare professionals (MHCPs) in ISH and RCFs using an online survey. The survey included setting preferences, stress and strain at work, recovery attitudes, stigmatisation, and factors ex…
Home Treatment for Acute Mental Healthcare
Utilization and Effectiveness of Home Treatment for People With Acute Severe Mental Illness
Treatment guidelines recommend home treatment (HT) as an effective alternative to inpatient treatment for individuals with severe, acute mental illness (SAMI). Nevertheless, HT is largely unfamiliar in German-speaking countries. Here we examined the utilization and effectiveness of HT services newly implemented in a large hospital setting in Switzerland. We used a naturalistic observational study design including patients ( n = 201, 18-65 years, …
