Buddhist-Confucian Dialogue: A Contribution to the Comparative Philosophy of Religion
On Philosophy and Religious Studies
Jay Garfield, Leah Kalmanson, and Nathan Loewen talk about the relationship between philosophy and religious studies
A Spiritual Geography of Early Chinese Thought: Gods, Ancestors, and Afterlife, By Kelly James Clark and Justin Winslett
Philosophy, religion, and 'studies: Scholarship as a spiritual exercise in Chinese thought
That Asian traditions do not distinguish between ‘philosophy' and ‘religion' is an oft-repeated truism. This obscures disciplinary categories operative in Asian intellectual history, especially those that do not map onto the academic landscape as we know it today. To disambiguate the terms ‘philosophy,' ‘religion,' ‘philosophy of religion,' and ‘philosophy of religious studies,' this essay explores the status of ‘studies' in Chinese thought. The …
How to Change Your Mind: The Contemplative Practices of Philosophy
The methods of philosophy may be associated with practices such as rational dialogue, logical analysis, argumentation, and intellectual inquiry. However, many philosophical traditions in Asia, as well as in the ancient Greek world, consider an array of embodied contemplative practices as central to the work of philosophy and as philosophical methods in themselves. Here we will survey a few such practices, including those of the ancient Greeks as …

Daya Krishna and Twentieth-Century Indian Philosophy: A New Way of Thinking about Art, Freedom, and Knowledge
"Daya Krishna and Twentieth-Century Indian Philosophy introduces contemporary Indian philosophy as a unique philosophical genre through the writings of one its most significant exponents, Daya Krishna (1924-2007). It surveys Daya Krishna's main intellectual projects: rereading classical Indian sources anew, his famous Samvad Project, and his ardent attempt to formulate a social and political theory that can better fit India's needs and challenges…
A Practical Guide to World Philosophies: Selves, Worlds, and Ways of Knowing
Traditions throughout the world and across history have tackled fundamental questions about the human condition. This one-of-a-kind guide shows how these different philosophies can be effectively studied together. Monika Kirloskar-Steinbach’s and Leah Kalmanson's introduction marks a break from conventional approaches. Instead of assuming philosophy has always operated with a single, easily identifiable conceptual framework across space and time,…
Cross-Cultural Existentialism: On the Meaning of Life in Asian and Western Thought
Expanding the scope of existential discourse beyond the Western tradition, this book engages Asian philosophies to reassess vital questions of life's purpose, death's imminence, and our capacity for living meaningfully in conditions of uncertainty. Inspired by European existentialism in theory, the book explores concrete techniques for existential practice via the philosophies of East Asia. The investigation begins with the provocative existentia…
Lessons from the Sanjie: Merit economies as catalysts for social change
When considering questions of Buddhism, business and the economy, the production and transfer of karmic merit is an often-overlooked resource, perhaps due to the unexamined assumption that merit is not, after all, ‘real.’ This essay aims to show that taking merit production seriously reveals a well-established economic model that operates alongside, and at times contrary to, systems of monetary exchange. Precisely because of the tendency to inter…

Buddhism and bell hooks: Liberatory Aesthetics and the Radical Subjectivity of No‐Self
This article engages bell hooks's concept of “radical black subjectivity” through the lens of the Buddhist doctrine of no‐self. Relying on the Zen theorist Dōgen and on resources from Japanese aesthetics, I argue that non‐attachment to the self clarifies hooks's claim that radical subjectivity unites our capacity for critical resistance with our capacity to appreciate beauty. I frame this argument in terms of hooks's concern that postmodernist id…
