Who is Moving? Mobility Responses of Foreigners and Natives to Regional Shocks
Workers’ geographic mobility can balance differences across labor markets facing asymmetric shocks. However, not everybody moves. This chapter provides the first cross-country evidence on the differential mobility responses of foreigners and natives to regional economic shocks in Europe (2003–2017). Unlike prior studies, we decompose net migration into inflows and outflows and distinguish responses during economic expansions and recessions. We fi…

Migration and local innovation
Does the presence of migrants influence innovation at the local level? This paper answers this question using novel data containing fine-grained information on the migrant population and geo-coded data on patent locations for a large set of 19 OECD countries over the 1990–2014 period. We find that a one percentage point increase in the local migrant share increases patent applications by 2.5%. This effect is driven by more urbanised and economica…

The new geography of remote jobs in Europe
The paper maps the diffusion of working from home across 30 European countries during the COVID-19 pandemic. We summarise the determinants of remote working and show that its uptake was lower than in the United States, and substantially uneven across/within countries, with most remote jobs concentrated in cities and capital regions. We then apply a variance decomposition procedure to investigate whether the uneven distribution of remote jobs can …
The Impact of Immigration on the Employment Dynamics of European Regions
Migration and Knowledge Diffusion
During the early 1990s, Germany offered temporary protection to 700,000 Yugoslavian refugees fleeing war. By 2000, many had been repatriated. We exploit this natural experiment to investigate the role of returning migrants in boosting export performance upon their return. Using confidential German administrative data, we find that industries with 10% more returning refugees exhibit larger exports between the pre- and postwar periods by 1% to 1.6%…
Agglomeration effects in a developing economy
I estimate the role of agglomeration economies and other local factors on productivity differences across Turkish provinces, which are some of the highest seen in OECD countries. Using a novel administrative dataset and historical instruments to deal with estimation concerns, I find that the elasticity of productivity to density is higher than in developed countries. Moreover, using an individual panel at the regional level, I find weak sorting e…
