The creative tax of videoconferencing
Videoconferencing has become a central medium for collaboration in contemporary organizations, yet mounting evidence suggests that it can carry a "creative tax" that is associated with lower idea generation. Building on information decision-making perspectives and the categorization elaboration model, we argue that team heterogeneity can partially offset this creativity loss in virtual teams. In a laboratory experiment with 415 participants organ…
Disregard for Native Language Rules of Speech Predicts Disregard for Truth-Telling
Inspired by general deviance theory, which proposes that individual traits predispose people to violate multiple types of norms or rules, we suggest that disregard for native language rules of speech may be positively correlated with disregard for other social norms such as truth-telling. Specifically, we hypothesize that given the opportunity to gain financially through untruthful statements, native-born speakers who speak incorrectly will be mo…

Colour‐dependent dishonesty in a game of chance
We report an odd result of a coin‐flip experiment which incentivises dishonest behaviour. Participants of two treatments were asked to flip a coin in private, of which one side was WHITE and the other side BLACK, and report the colour shown by the coin. Payoff depended on the reported colour: in one treatment WHITE was the more profitable outcome whereas in the other treatment BLACK was more profitable. Surprisingly, the magnitude of cheating, as…
An Empirical Investigation of “Physician Congestion” in U.S. University Hospitals
We add a new angle to the debate on whether greater healthcare spending is associated with better outcomes, by focusing on the link between the size of the physician workforce at the ward level and healthcare results. Drawing on standard organization theories, we proposed that due to organizational limitations, the relationship between physician workforce size and medical performance is hump-shaped. Using a sample of 150 U.S. university departmen…

The Correlation among Immigrant Homeownership, Objective and Subjective Characteristics, and Civic Participation
The correlation between immigrant objective and subjective characteristics and the likelihood of achieving homeownership is tested empirically. Also, the article examines whether homeownership promotes civic participation and community involvement among immigrants. Observing a sample of immigrants who arrived in Israel between the years 1989 and 2004, it is found that a longer stay in the receiving country, living in proximity to other immigrants…
