  • Marginalizing mortality: The fight against death as the communicative cultural condition

    Brent Yergensen•ARTICLE•Review of Communication•2024

Rhetoric is intertwined with imagined and hypothesized conceptions of the future. An intellectual and discursive tool that is permanently engaged in our planning against future exigencies and, importantly, designed through invention and operating through delivery, rhetoric is an organic response in the contemporary human effort to elude death. Our current, mediated human condition is a unifying cultural effort to marginalize death from both the m…

  • Theodor Adorno’s Negative Dialectics in Digital Theology: The Visceral Narratology of Metaphor and Personification

Brent Yergensen, Religious Communication Association•ARTICLE•The Journal of Communication and…•2024

Demonstrating the contemporary religious aesthetic amid the growth of digital theological productions, the short film production initiatives of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are noteworthy considering their outreach scope and production quality. By connecting Theodor Adorno’s negative dialectics to Edvard Munch’s concepts of artistic form, this study demonstrates the horror aesthetic in cinematic narrative structures that culminate toward discomforting endings. Negative dialectics is applicable as a cinema didactic via magnification of difficulty through narrative endings that depict elusive villains
