Political philosophy
As leader of the new Islamic community (ummah) 1 the Prophet Muhammad combined religious interests with requirements of politics (siyāsah, literally “government”). 2 In the so-called Constitution of Medina the community of the believers declared their solidarity against common enemies and accepted Muḥammad as prophet and arbiter between rival clans. 3 His leadership was legitimized by the divine revelation.
Das Kitāb al-Ādāb al-kabīr des Ibn al-Muqaffaʿ als Ausdruck griechischer Ethik, islamischer Ideologie und iranisch-sassanidischer Hofetikette
In the 8th century Ibn al-Muqaffaʿ wrote his book about the instructions for the ruler, the Kitāb al-Ādāb al-kabīr. Central themes are friendship, prudence, justice and moderation; knowledge and reason are cornerstones, which explicitly do not exclude the values of religion. We detect central concepts of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics. At the same time, in comparison with the letters by his contemporary ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd al-Kātib, with the apocryphal…
Cosmic Order and Divine Power: Pseudo-Aristotle, On the Cosmos
The treatise De mundo (On the Cosmos), dated around the 1st century BCE, offers a cosmology in the Peripatetic tradition which draws also on Platonic and Stoic thought and subordinates what happens in the cosmos to the might of an omnipotent god. Thus the work is paradigmatic for the philosophical and religious concepts of the early imperial age, which offer points of contact with nascent Christianity. In line with the aims of the SAPERE series, …
Humanism: A tradition common to both Islam and Europe
The growing interest of the Arabs in Arabic translations from Greek since the 8th century has been interpreted as a sign of humanism in Islam. This is comparable to humanists in Europe who, since the 14th century, considered the Greek and Latin literature the foundation of spiritual and moral education. We will have to address the question of whether a similar ideal of education has been developed in harmony with religion in the Islamic cultural …
Islamic Thought in the Dialogue of Cultures: A Historical and Bibliographical Survey
Islamic thought is the most beautiful result of a multicultural dialogue. Islamic culture became a bridge between antiquity, Iranian scholars, Syriac and Arabic Christians and the Latin Middle Ages. Its richness of ideas, its plurality of values can contribute to the requirements of modern plurality. The monograph aims at a historical and bibliographical survey of the qurʾānic and rational world-view of early Islam, of the period of translations …
