Geospatial data acquisition methods like airborne LiDAR allow for obtaining large volumes of data, such as aerial and satellite imagery, which are increasingly being used in archaeology. As in other subjects, the ability to produce raw datasets far exceeds the capacity of domain experts to process and analyze them, but recent developments in image processing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Machine Learning (ML) and related technologies ena…
Measuring the effect of self-reported sexual orientation on earnings
This study uses General Social Survey (GSS) data to explore the difference in earnings between gay, lesbian, bisexual, and heterosexual individuals. The most recent GSS surveys have data on self-identified sexual orientation, providing an opportunity to explore its role as a determinant of earnings with more accuracy than previous estimations in the literature relying on sexual history or cohabitation status to determine sexual orientation. Resul…
Regional Effects of Perceived Risks of Harm on Cigarette Smoking among U.S. High School Seniors
Overall, there has been an increasing trend in the perceived risk of harm from smoking among U.S. high school seniors. However, these perceptions of risk have been falling in recent years. This study uses regional-level panel data from the Monitoring the Future survey and a fixed effects model to estimate the effect of perceived risk on three regional measurements of smoking behavior: consumption, lifetime prevalence, and daily smoking prevalence…
Soil quality indices for metal(loid) contamination
Soil degradation by metal and metalloid (metal[loid]) contamination represents a widespread environmental threat. Most studies investigating soil metal(loid) contamination have disregarded the soil quality concept. Enzyme activities (EAs) are good soil quality indicators due to their direct connection to functions related to C, N, P, and S cycles and their sensitivity to metal(loid) contamination. This review (a) provides an overview of the devel…
