Zum Newton-Komplex
The Newton complex: divine world economy or human self-assertion? My contribution attempts to place the approach of Dieter Groh’s unfinished trilogy on the Newton complex in a broader framework of the philosophy and history of science. To this end, I first sketch the contextualisation of the genesis of modern science in the history of ideas that Groh strives for. Then, I elaborate his central theses concerning the Newton complex. Next, I compare …
Computer simulation in data analysis
The paper presents a case study of the data analysis in the CDHS scattering experiment of particle physics performed in 1983. The case study compares the function of computer simulation in the data analysis with recent philosophical work on the role of simulations in high energy physics (HEP) and the theory-ladenness of the data. In the data analysis of CDHS, computer simulations entered an iterative process of probabilistic data correction. The …

Naturphilosophie

Between Rationalism and Empiricism
Erhard Scheibe is one of the most outstanding German philosophers of science. He has written extensively on all the problems that confront the philosophy of mathematics and physics: rationalism versus empiricism, the laws of nature, and reductionism. He has published books on the logical foundations of quantum mechanics and on the reduction of physical theories. Little of his work has been translated into English. This collection of 38 essays is …
