  • Impact of a 10-year shift in ambient air quality on mortality in Canada

Open Access•Hong Chen, H-Y Chen et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet Planetary Health•2025

  • Exploring the local impacts of heat on mortality

Open Access•Matthew Quick, Monica Duong•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Public Health•2025•References: 21

  • Exploring the associations between cooling centre accessibility and marginalization in Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver, Canada

Open Access•Matthew Quick, Tanya Christidis et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Geographies /…•2023•References: 44

Cooling centres provide respite, safety, and social support during extreme heat events for populations that do not have the resources to own or operate in‐home air conditioning. The objective of this study was to measure the spatial accessibility of cooling centres and analyze the associations between cooling centre access and marginalization in Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver, Canada. The potential spatial accessibility of cooling centres withi…

  • Exploring the global and local patterns of income segregation in Toronto, Canada

    Open Access•Matthew Quick, Nick Revington•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B Urban…•2022

Residential income segregation is a spatial manifestation of social inequality and is an important factor that influences access to resources, services, and amenities. In general, past research analyzing income segregation has applied index-based methods to describe the separation of low-income households at one spatial scale; however, existing studies have not yet considered how income segregation varies across multiple income classes, spatial s…

  • Urban-rural variation in the association between social support availability and cognitive function in middle-aged and older adults

    Open Access•Matthew Quick, Emily Rutter et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Place•2022•References: 7

  • The price of punishment

Open Access•Richard A Fabes, Evandra Catherine et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology in the Schools•2021

The number of days missed due to suspensions (DMS) was analyzed in a national sample of K‐12 public schools in the U.S. In the 2017–2018 national sample, about 11 million days of school were missed due to suspension. Rates of DMS varied across the regions of the U.S., from state to state, and from school to school (greater in nonelementary and non‐charter public schools). Additionally, disparities were found with higher rates found for boys relat…

  • Using the specification curve to teach spatial data analysis and explore geographic uncertainties

Peter Kedron, Matthew Quick et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography in Higher…•2021•Cited by: 2

Educational materials focused on spatial data analysis often feature mathematical descriptions of methods and step-by-step instructions of software tools, but infrequently discuss the set of decisions involved in specifying a statistical model. Failing to consider model specification may lead to specification searching, or the process of repeating analyses to obtain results that meet the criteria thought to be required for publication, and the di…

  • Exploring diverse lived experiences in the Smart City through Creative Analytic Practice

Open Access•Sarah Edge, Sara Edge et al.•ARTICLE•Cities•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 34

  • Time-varying relationships between land use and crime

Open Access•Matthew Quick, Jane Law et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B Urban…•2019

Neighborhood land use composition influences the geographical patterns of property crime. Few studies, however, have investigated if, and how, the relationships between land use and crime change over time. This research applies a Bayesian spatio-temporal regression model to analyze 12 seasons of property crime at the small-area scale. Time-varying regression coefficients estimate the seasonally varying relationships between land use and crime and…

  • Youthification across the metropolitan system

Open Access•Markus Moos, Pierre Filion et al.•ARTICLE•Cities•2019•Cited by: 9•References: 36

  • Crime-general and crime-specific spatial patterns

Open Access•Matthew Quick, Guangquan Li et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Criminal Justice•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 54

  • Open area and road density as land use indicators of young offender residential locations at the small-area level

    Open Access•Jane Law, Matthew Quick et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 61

This research explores associations between land use types and young offender residential location in the Regional Municipality of York, Ontario, Canada, at a small-area level. Employing a Bayesian spatial modelling approach, we found that after controlling for socio-economic risk factors, proportion of open area land use was positively associated, and road density negatively associated, with residential location of young offenders. Map decomposi…
