A move towards regulation flexibility and pragmatism? State entrepreneurialism in China’s pilot development zone
This article examines the evolving dynamics of state entrepreneurialism amid the ongoing restructuring of urban governance in China, focusing on the Shenzhen Qianhai Pilot Zone—a flagship area exemplifying China’s latest advances in financial innovation and territorial development. Drawing on on-site observations and interviews with 13 senior officials from the local authority and key enterprises involved in the zone’s development, this study rev…

Spatial accessibility of emergency medical services in Chongqing, Southwest China
Background: Timely access to emergency medical services (EMS) can significantly reduce mortality. In China, the evidence of the accessibility of complete EMS which considers two related trips and involves large rural areas is insufficient. This study aimed to explore the accessibility of ambulance services and complete EMS in Chongqing and its regional differences, and to provide a reference for improving spatial accessibility of EMS in Chongqing…
Death attitudes and Chinese college students’ mental health
Death attitudes can have significant impacts on individuals' mental health. The present study used a person-centered approach to identify 588 Chinese college students' profiles of death attitudes (i.e., fear of death, death avoidance, neutral acceptance, escape acceptance, and approach acceptance), as well as their associations with socio-demographic factors and mental health outcomes. Latent profile analysis identified five subgroups of students…
Actually existing state entrepreneurialism
This paper enriches the understanding of actually existing state entrepreneurialism (SE) through politics of scale, regulatory flexibility, and financialization. The emphasis on “actually existing” uncovers how political discourses are materialized into variegated policy outcomes and territorial politics. The central-local relations and their reinforcement through scalar politics are essential to state regulation, revealing power dynamics in SE. …
The Semantics of Comparatives
Degree semantics has been developed to study how the meanings of measurement and comparison are encoded in natural language. Within degree semantics, this paper proposes a difference-based (or subtraction-based) approach to analyze the semantics of comparatives. The motivation is the measurability and comparability of differences involved in comparatives. The main claim is that comparatives encode a subtraction equation among three scalar values:…
Mitigating the Risks in Energy Retrofits of Residential Buildings in China
To speed up residential energy retrofitting in the Hot Summer and Cold Winter(HSCW) zone, the barriers to retrofitting projects need elimination. Energy retrofitting contributes to improving building quality and living comfort, but has not been accepted by the public. It stems from poor project performance in quality, time, costs, etc. The risk is an essential factor hindering such project objectives and project success. Residential energy retrof…
