  • Scoping Review of Bidirectional Intimate Partner Violence Using Dyadic Data

    Open Access•Carla S Stover, Alison Krau et al.•ARTICLE•Trauma Violence & Abuse•2026

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is often considered a unidirectional phenomenon even though historical debate has highlighted the prevalence of bidirectional IPV, where both partners in a couple use and experience IPV. Dyadic data, in which both partners report on IPV, is important because agreement in partner reports of IPV is low. This scoping review aimed to identify rates of bidirectional IPV and examined how different methods of reporting bi…

  • Development of Clinical Practice Guidelines for Responding to Intimate Partner Violence Use Disclosures in U.S. Healthcare Settings

    Open Access•Galina A Portnoy, Carla S Stover et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Violence•2025•References: 3

The healthcare system plays a critical role in intimate partner violence (IPV) detection and response through implementation of routine screening for IPV experiences (i.e., victimization). Yet, development of guidelines for identifying and responding to those who use violence in relationships (i.e., perpetration) is in its infancy. We used a multi-phased exploratory sequential mixed methods approach to develop clinical practice guidelines for res…

  • The Promise of a Retreat

Open Access•Candice Presseau, Sarah Wall et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2025•References: 4

To supplement the mental health programming offered to women veterans within the Veterans Health Administration, a retreat-based suicide prevention program could foster healing through social connection and holistic health. However, no study has investigated retreat-based suicide prevention program components relevant for violence-exposed women veterans. To address this gap, we conducted focus groups with women veterans and semi-structured interv…

  • Gender-based violence and suicidal ideation among Indian women from slums

Open Access•Anushka R Patel, Shraddha Prabhu et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2021

Results align with research showing that CA-GBV is particularly pernicious and affects SI. While anxiety and PTSD symptoms are related to CA-GBV, results suggest the relative importance of depression severity in the relation between CA-GBV and SI. Screening for SI among GBV survivors and treating depression symptoms may reduce the risk of suicide. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)

  • An epidemiological evaluation of trauma types in a cohort of deployed service members

Open Access•Candice Presseau, Brett T Litz et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2019

More epidemiological research is needed to understand the role of trauma type in relation to mental health among nontreatment-seeking service members. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Discrimination and mental health in adult transracial adoptees

Candice Presseau, Cirleen Deblaere et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•2019

In response to the growing trend of White parents adopting children from different racial backgrounds, and heeding the call for more research on adoption-related issues, the present study examined the relationship between perceived racial discrimination and mental health of 206 adult transracial adoptees adopted by White parents. In addition, the study examined adoptive parent racial socialization as a buffering variable in the perceived discrimi…

  • Childhood maltreatment and post-deployment psychological distress

Candice Presseau, Ateka A Contractor et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2017

Our findings suggest that childhood maltreatment may serve to influence returning veterans' experiences of psychological distress indirectly through increased emotional numbing following deployment. The importance of attending to emotional numbing symptoms among veterans with experiences of childhood maltreatment after deployment is highlighted. (PsycINFO Database Record

  • Different types of combat experiences and associated symptoms in OEF and OIF National Guard and reserve veterans

Open Access•M Tracie Shea, Candice Presseau et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2016

The relative degree of exposure to life threat and death/loss events in a war-zone may impact the development of different types of symptoms. These findings highlight the importance of considering different types of trauma exposure in future research. (PsycINFO Database Record
