  • Beyond conservation of natural capital

    Open Access•Birger Priddat, Oliver Schlaudt•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2025

In the context of economic policy advice, the common understanding of sustainability focuses on the preservation of natural capital. In the Anthropocene , which is characterised by anthropogenically induced, abrupt and/or long-term, often irreducible ecosystem dynamics and a co-evolution of technology and environment, this understanding reaches its limits. We therefore propose three modifications: shifting the baseline from a static to a dynamic …

  • From dollars to Joules

    Open Access•Oliver Schlaudt•ARTICLE•Studies in History and Philosophy…•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 35

For as long as ecological economics has existed, non-economic, physical quantities have played a crucial role in it, in particular the energy metric. However, the correct systematic place of these quantities in economic theory, in particular their relation to the metric of economic value, remains one of the unsolved problems of the ecological approach to economics. In this article, I aim to make progress on this issue by systematically exploring …

  • Exaptation in the Co-evolution of Technology and Mind

    Open Access•Oliver Schlaudt•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Technology•2022

The term exaptation, describing the phenomenon that an existing trait or tool proves to be of new adaptive value in a new context, is flourishing in recent literature from cultural evolution and cognitive archaeology. Yet there also exists an older literature from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries which studied more or less systematically the phenomenon of “change of function” in culture and tool use. Michel Foucault and Ludwig Noiré, who de…

  • Sohn-Rethel als Denker der Ökonomie

    Open Access•Oliver Schlaudt•ARTICLE•Recherches germaniques•2020

  • Type and Token in the Prehistoric Origins of Numbers

    Open Access•Oliver Schlaudt•ARTICLE•Cambridge Archaeological Journal•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 47

The type–token distinction and the notion of ‘tokenization’ are proposed as analytical tools that may help us understand better the emergence of numbers and mathematical thinking from the non-mathematical cultural practices of the Upper Palaeolithic such as painting, decorating portable objects, or making ornaments from beads, as described in recent studies in cognitive archaeology. While the type–token distinction has been a salient element in r…

  • Reflective Equilibria in Metrology

    Open Access•Oliver Schlaudt•ARTICLE•Analyse & Kritik•2016•References: 5

In this paper I propose to read the history of systems of units, and in particular the current reform of the International System of Units (SI), understood as a set of measuring norms, in the light of reflective equilibria. The idea is that the model of reflective equilibria actually applies to processes which can be empirically observed or studied. This can help us to understand the nature of normativity and to shed light on its relativity to, a…
