Geochemical investigation of Late Roman glass and available raw material at the industrial complex of Tel Yavne, Israel
A Late Roman primary-glass production site was discovered near Tel Yavne, Israel, within a large Late Roman-Byzantine industrial complex. Due to its location near several sandy quartz-rich deposits, the site offers a unique opportunity to simultaneously investigate natron glass production and raw material sourcing in the southern Levant. The glass and the nearby sand deposits were investigated using grain-size, mineralogy, detailed chemical compo…
Dawn of the Initial and Early Upper Paleolithic blade industries in the Levant
Shualim Rockshelter is situated in the arid central highlands of the Negev in southern Israel and features three occupation layers, spanning from the Initial Upper Paleolithic to the Early Upper Paleolithic, with ages ranging from 47 to 36 ka cal. BP. Site chronology was established by radiocarbon dating of ostrich eggshell fragments and optically stimulated dating of sediments. Cultural variability was assessed through a technotypological analys…
Human Response to Paleo-Hydrological Fluctuations at ‘En Ḥaẓeva, Israel
The present study investigates human behaviour in response to paleo-hydrological fluctuations at the archaeological site of ‘En Ḥaẓeva, located in the arid Arabah Valley, Israel. Such hydrological changes were determined through various indicators, including the taxonomic and isotopic composition of mollusk shells, as well as sedimentological and geological observations. A survey of the vicinity indicates that the site is located along a marginal…
Identifying buried byzantine-early Islamic agricultural soils in the Yavne Hinterlands, Israel
Nubian Levallois Cores from MIS 5 Alluvial Terraces in the Negev Desert
The Negev region is a part of the great desert belt of north Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, a physical and environmental barrier between eastern Africa and southwest Asia. The proximity of the Negev Desert to the Eastern Mediterranean ecological zone to its north, makes it an interesting study area for identifying movements of people and ideas between these areas, in particular during interglacial periods such as Marine Isotope Stage 5 (MIS 5)…
The Early Natufian Site of Hof Shahaf, Israel
The terminal Pleistocene Natufian Culture of the Levant is one of the best-documented cases of preagricultural sedentism in prehistory, thanks to the proliferation of durable architecture, burial grounds, and intensified socioeconomic practices. Hof Shahaf, located on the shore of Lake Kinneret in Israel, is a recently excavated Natufian site whose interpretation presents a conundrum. On the one hand, the site produced evidence of architecture, b…
