Inoculating Against Moral Disengagement Creates Ethical Adherence for Narcissism
Increasing honesty is critical in modern society. Moral Disengagement Tactics (MDTs) enable individuals to engage in unethical behavior while avoiding self-criticism, making MDTs a form of self-persuasion. One way to prevent persuasion is inoculation. Across three experiments ( N = 972), two preregistered, we randomly assigned individuals to a code of ethics versus inoculation to MDTs condition. Study 1 ( n = 443) found that those high in narciss…
Trajectories of loneliness in Canadian adolescents over the Covid-19 pandemic
Increases in adolescent loneliness were a significant concern during the lockdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic. We use longitudinal survey data from the Cannabis Use, Obesity, Mental Health, Physical Activity, Alcohol Use, Smoking, and Sedentary Behavior study from 2017 to 2023 to assess whether increases in loneliness correspond to lockdowns, whether different cohorts differ in the trajectories of loneliness ratings and whether social support and r…
Development of a Short Version of the Jackson Career Explorer: The JCE Mini
The purpose of the present study was to create a shorter and contemporary version of the Jackson Career Explorer (JCE), titled "The JCE Mini". Utilizing archival data of people who had completed the JCE ( N = 3105), half of the sample was used to develop shorter, three-item scales, and the second half was used to validate the shorter measure (102 items) with additional self-report responses. The JCE Mini showed good internal consistency for most …
Community Connection and Loneliness in Canada
The purpose of this study was to examine how loneliness relates to community size, participation and attitudes. We conducted two studies using three large‐scale Canadian datasets (total N = 20,071). Community size was determined by census postal code areas, and loneliness, community participation and attitudes were evaluated by self‐report ratings. In each cross‐sectional study, we use correlations, multiple regression and one‐way ANOVA analyses …
Examining the Connectorship Scale: Factor Structure and Correlations With Self-Efficacy and Extraversion
The Connectorship Scale was designed to assess how leaders connect with their followers and is described to measure eight dimensions: social interactivity, dependability, positive communication, presenting oneself, storytelling ability, belief in networking, tangible introduction, and belief in the importance of online networking. This study explores the scale properties and confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) of the Connectorship Scale and examin…
Loneliness and screen time usage over a year
INTRODUCTION: This study investigates the stability of loneliness in adolescents over a 1-year period. Also, we examine how the use of screen time media (watching television, playing video games, surfing the Internet, and texting) predicts loneliness over a year and how loneliness predicts screen time media usage. METHODS: The study uses survey data from the Cannabis, Obesity, Mental health, Physical activity, Alcohol, Smoking, and Sedentary beha…
Loneliness unlocked: Associations with smartphone use and personality
Communication and relationships have been dramatically altered among emerging adults thanks to the rapid adoption of the smartphone in just over a decade. Studying the effects of evolving personal technology helps researchers understand both the detriments of widespread adoption and the benefits that accompany the technology. One such area of concern is the relationship of technology with loneliness. Emerging adulthood is described as the period …
