Bringing Anti‐Oppression Pedagogy Training Into a Predominately White Institution in the United States
We aim to better understand how to design impactful anti‐oppression pedagogy training programs for faculty at predominantly White institutions (PWIs). To do this, we analyzed data from faculty participants in an anti‐oppression training program to identify factors that faculty described as either challenges or accelerators to bringing anti‐oppression pedagogy into the classroom. We contextualize these factors using an ecological perspective to ex…
Using geographic information systems to assess community‐level vulnerability to housing insecurity in rural areas
Research examining homelessness in rural areas has been sparse. The current study aims to expand conceptions of rural homelessness by mapping community‐level risk factors related to housing insecurity. Geographic information systems (GIS) techniques were used to map the distribution of select community‐level risk indicators in the State of Maine. Three methodological choices related to this process are demonstrated: (1) selection and distribution…
Dismissing chronic illness
In the US, medical training is inadequate regarding the symptomatology, prognosis, and treatment for myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). As a result, many physicians lack the appropriate level of knowledge about effective methods for ME and CFS symptom reduction and often suggest inappropriate treatments, such as increased exercise or psychiatric services. The authors' purpose in this study was to analyze negative p…
Discursive context and language as action
Community psychology has long valued understanding the contextual issues that maintain social problems. The present study demonstrates the use of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to examine the discursive context surrounding the issue of human trafficking. CDA was used to understand the ways that local stakeholders in Hawai‘i ( N = 13) described the issue of human trafficking. Human trafficking is well suited for this type of analysis because it…
Describing Trajectories of Homeless Service Use in Hawai‘i Using Latent Class Growth Analysis
The State of Hawai‘i, like many other areas across the United States, has large numbers of individuals and families experiencing homelessness, many of whom seek support through statewide shelters and services. This study explored the diversity of ways in which individuals and families moved through Hawai‘i's homeless service system. Using administrative data, a cohort of new service users was tracked across time to trace the developmental traject…
Increasing Knowledge of Sexual Abuse
Objective: Child sexual abuse is a significant health problem with potential long-term consequences for victims. Therefore, prevention and education programs are critical. This preliminary study evaluates changes in children’s knowledge of sexual abuse using a school-based train-the-trainer curriculum. Emphasis was placed on developing a curriculum that considered the unique cultural context in Hawai‘i. Method: School staff who had been trained o…
