  • Dangers of Youth

    Briony Neilson•BOOK•Dangers of Youth•2025

In 1912 French legislators established a distinct criminal justice system for juveniles, enshrining probation at its heart and decriminalizing offences committed by children under the age of thirteen. Dangers of Youth examines critical debates about juvenile liability and the appropriate treatment of young offenders.

  • Indigenous Reservations in Australia and New Caledonia

Isabelle Merle, Charlotte Ann Chopin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Pacific History•2025

Based on the study of colonial archives relating to New Caledonia and on the rich historiography on Australia, especially pertaining to the colony of New South Wales, this article focuses on the ‘indigenous reservation’ as a particular object of study and attempts to shed light on its origins and its development in two territories built and conceived by France and Britain as settler colonies. Rather than providing a direct comparison, the article…

  • Connected Histories of Empire

Open Access•Charlotte Ann Chopin, Briony Neilson•ARTICLE•Journal of Pacific History•2025

This special issue explores the connected histories of France, Britain, and the Pacific in the 19th and early 20th centuries at the level of states, colonial administrations, people, practices, and discourses. We have two core aims: firstly, to broaden the horizons of enquiry of emerging histories of transimperial connection; and secondly, to address the Pacific as more than a mere backdrop to these connections by highlighting the role of the oce…

  • Settler Colonial Dynamics Across the Coral Sea

Open Access•Charlotte Ann Chopin, Briony Neilson•ARTICLE•Journal of Pacific History•2025

In 1903, settlers in Nouméa celebrated the 50th anniversary of the French annexation of New Caledonia. They welcomed an Australian delegation – the first to represent the Commonwealth overseas since Australia's federation in 1901, and the introduction of the racially exclusionary White Australia policy. This article traces the circulation of ideas about settler self-government across the Coral Sea in the wake of federation, examining the ways in …

  • Power, pacification and legacies of French colonialism in New Caledonia

    Briony Neilson•ARTICLE•Modern & Contemporary France•2023•References: 10

In June 2022 a new public statue was unveiled in New Caledonia. The new statue, erected in the Place des Cocotiers in central Nouméa, depicts the famous handshake between Kanak separatist leader Jean-Marie Tjibaou and loyalist Caldoche leader Jacques Lafleur that had sealed the French-brokered Matignon Accords, bringing years of violent conflict between Indigenous and settler communities to a close. The inauguration of the new monument, 34 years …

  • Staking Claims

    Briony Neilson•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of French…•2023

In seeking to preserve and highlight the history and heritage of the New Caledonian bagne, advocates have frequently sought inspiration and guidance from approaches undertaken at convict sites in neighbouring Australia. This article examines some of the ways convict history and heritage have been engaged with in New Caledonia since the 1960s and reflects on how these approaches compare to the engagement with similar questions in Australia over a …

  • Moral Rubbish in Close Proximity”

    Open Access•Briony Neilson•ARTICLE•International Review of Social…•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 17

In the second half of the nineteenth century, the two convict-built European settler colonial projects in Oceania, French New Caledonia and British Australia, were geographically close yet ideologically distant. Observers in the Australian colonies regularly characterized French colonization as backward, inhumane, and uncivilized, often pointing to the penal colony in New Caledonia as evidence. Conversely, French commentators, while acknowledging…

  • Settling Scores in New Caledonia and Australia

    Open Access•Briony Neilson•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Politics &…•2018

This article explores the entanglements of Australia and New Caledonia as settler colonies with convict histories. Existing historiography focuses on the importance of the Australian model in inspiring the French to transport convicts to settler colonies, and has explored the moral panic that erupted over the menace of escaped French convicts invading the Australian colonies after the abolition of British convict transportation. My analysis shift…
