  • Contribution of geophysics to outlining the foundation structure of the Islamic Museum, Cairo, Egypt

    Open Access•Mohamed A Khalil, A M Abbas et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2005•Cited by: 1

The Islamic museum was erected in 1896. The building is situated in the heart of Cairo (capital of Egypt) and holds marvellous Islamic antiquities and priceless ancient hand‐writing and rare books. Recently, a restoration scheme has been planned to secure the old building which suffers from weakened foundations. In addition, the wooden roofs will be replaced by concrete ones and an extra floor will be integrated into the building. Unfortunately, …

  • Complementary integrated geophysical investigation around Al‐Zayyan temple, Kharga oasis, Al‐Wadi Al‐Jadeed (New Valley), Egypt

    Open Access•M Atya, M A Atya et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2005•Cited by: 2•References: 3

Qasr Al‐Zayyan or Al‐Zayyan temple in Al‐Kharga oasis is documented as a node in the fortress chain that was built by the Romans to secure Darb Al‐Arbain; the slaver's trade caravan route between Asyuit and Sudan. The historical and archaeological background of the temple is very scarce; it has been ascribed to Amenebis and was restored during the reign of Emperor Antoninus AD 138–161. In March 2001, an integrated ground‐penetrating radar (GPR) a…

  • Ground‐penetrating radar and magnetic survey to the west of Al‐Zayyan Temple, Kharga Oasis, Al‐Wadi Al‐Jadeed (New Valley), Egypt

    Open Access•Hiroyuki Kamei, Magdy Atya et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2002•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Al‐Zayyan Temple or Qasr Al‐Zayyan might be regarded as one in a chain of several fortresses that the Romans built to secure the salver's trade caravan route between Asyut and Sudan, known as Darb Al‐Arbain. Al‐Zayyan temple lies about 25 km south of Al‐Kharga city, the capital of the New Valley, and deviates to the east of Al‐Kharga‐Paris main road some 2 km along the Al‐Zayyan‐Aarif minor road. The background information about the temple is ver…

  • Geophysical survey of Hirui-Otsuka Mounded Tomb in Ogaki, Japan

Open Access•Hiroyuki Kamei, Yuzo Marukawa et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2000

The Hirui-Otsuka mounded tomb located in the city of Ogaki, Gifu Prefecture, Japan, is one of the largest keyhole-shaped mounded tombs in the Tokai region. Archaeological investigations of this tomb have been carried out continuously since 1994. Some of the geophysical methods were adopted in this investigation on the basis of a remarkable concept of ‘sensor fusion’. In this paper, the results of the geophysical surveys are presented. Ground-pene…

  • High-density resistivity survey and experimental measurement of subsurface temperatures on Hirui-Otsuka Mounded Tomb in Ogaki, Japan

Open Access•Masato Mori, Hiroyuki Kamei et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•1999

The Hirui-Otsuka mounded tomb located in Ogaki City, Gifu Prefecture, Japan, dates back to the late fourth century ad. A resistivity survey was carried out in order to acquire detailed information about the central burial on the top of the mound. A 23.5 m by 16.5 m rectangular area was surveyed, and 34 measurement lines each with a length of 23.5 m were measured at intervals of 0.5 m. The Wenner configuration was adopted; electrode spacing was ch…

  • Estimation of the systematic error of three‐component geomagnetic data using the Abic minimization method

    Open Access•Yuzo Marukawa, Hiroyuki Kamei•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•1999

Geomagnetic data are often affected by a systematic error caused by the posture error and the temperature change in an instrument, etc. The vector field measurements using the three-component fluxgate gradiometer are more sensitive to the posture and temperature changes than total field measurements. An approach to estimate and remove the systematic error in the vector geomagnetic data is proposed. Firstly, the systematic error is modelled by a l…
