  • Conceptual contamination

Misinformation has been extensively studied as both maliciously intended propaganda and accidentally experienced incorrect assumptions. We contend that “conceptual contamination” is the process by which the learning of incorrect information interferes, pollutes, or otherwise disrupts the learning of correct information. This is similar to a medical model of disease transmission wherein misinformation travels from person to person via multiple met…

Undergraduates (N = 424) enrolled in 4 universities from 3 countries read a refutation text on genetically modified foods (GMFs) and were then randomly assigned to receive additional information about advantages of GMFs, disadvantages of GMF…

  • Augmenting the Refutation Text Effect with Analogies and Graphics

    Robert W Danielson, Gale M Sinatra et al.•ARTICLE•Discourse Processes•2016•Cited by: 10•References: 40

Refutation texts have been shown to be effective at promoting knowledge revision. It has been suggested that refutation texts are most effective when the misconception and the correct information are co-activated and integrated with causal networks that support the correct information. We explored two augmentations to a refutation text that might enhance the possibility of co-activation, integration, and thus revision: analogies and graphics. Par…
