Consonant palatalization in Barabian as a reflex of the vowel palatal harmony law (based on ultrasound visualization data)
Issues of palatality and palatalization continue to be the subject of scholarly debate, particularly considering recent advances in experimental phonetic methods and instrumentation. For Turkic languages with a stable system of palatal vowel harmony, both the theoretical interpretation and the empirical description of palatalization are of particular importance. This article investigates the mechanisms by which the acoustic effect of consonantal …
Intonational and pragmatic characteristics of the dialogic speech of Barabians and Chats
The article deals with the intonation of dialogic speech in two Turkic idioms of Southern Siberia: Barabian and Chat. The research material consists of field recordings obtained by the authors from native Barabian and Chat speakers (more than 350 utterances in total). As recording high-quality authentic dialogic speech presents certain difficulties, the authors opted to use the map tasks method, a variant of information lag tasks. In our implemen…

Distribution of voiced fricative consonants of the Surgut dialect of the Khanty language in the position after vowels
This work aims at identifying and describing the articulatory characteristics of the bilabial and guttural consonant phonemes of the Surgut dialect of the Khanty language by distributive analysis. The Khanty language is characterized by a pronounced dialect fragmentation. The Surgut dialect is one of the Eastern Khanty dialects. A number of works are devoted to its vocalism, while only one paper addresses the Surgut consonantism. The system of th…
Study of the intermittent vowels of the Surgut dialect of the Khanty language through the method of direct digital laryngoscopy
Introduction: the Khanty language and its dialects (in particular, the Surgut one) are still poorly studied from the point of view of the experimental phonetics. Direct digital laryngoscopy is one of the methods of dynamic observation of speech production processes in the larynx, which allows to describe not only the articulatory features of a concrete sound, but also to trace the processes of co-articulation and adaptation. Objective: to analyze…
Intonation of modal interrogative sentences in the Altai language (on the Altai-Kizhi folklore material)
Half a century is it much or not? (on the 75th birthday of Iraida Yakovlevna Selyutina)
Articulatory Traits of “a”-Type Sound Realizations in the Barabian, Altai, and Bashkir Languages in the Comparative Aspect
Purpose. Experimental phonetics is a fundamental source of typological reconstructions. It provides plausible data on the phonetic processes progressing in a language, dialect, or subdialect. In this paper, we compare the results of MRI-investigation of the sound a (it being the most frequently used in the Turkic languages) in related though quite distant languages: Baraba-Tatar, Altai (Ust-Khan subdialect) and Bashkir (Eastern dialect). Thus, th…
