    Open Access•Michelina M Witte, Alyson D Brady et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of School Health•2026

BACKGROUND: Children in urban areas face elevated risk for bicycle-related injuries, yet few evidence-based curricula address bicycle safety for elementary school physical education (P.E.) settings. METHODS: The BikeSafe Elementary School Curriculum (BESC) is an off-bicycle, standards-aligned program for grades 2-5. Unintentional injuries, such as pedestrian, bicycle, and drowning injuries—which are typically preventable when proper safety precautions are followed—are the leading cause of death among the pediatric population of the United States. The largest incidence of pediatric pedestrian injuries and fatalities occurs within Miami-Dade County (M-DC), Florida. In 2003, the University of Miami KiDZ Neuroscience Center (KNC) created the WalkSafe program to …

  • WalkSafe Keeps Walking for 15 Years: A Program Review

Sabine Delouche, Cristina Ballesteros et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2019

Unintentional injury is the leading cause of death among children aged 5 to 14 years. The WalkSafe program was developed in response to the number of children admitted to Miami–Dade County, Florida, level-1 trauma centers. WalkSafe was piloted in an initially high-risk neighborhood, which now exhibits a low density of pedestrian crashes. Following countywide implementation of WalkSafe, trauma data exhibit a 78% decrease in pediatric injuries. Thi…

  • Vision Zero in the United States Versus Sweden: Infrastructure Improvement for Cycling Safety

Matthew Cushing, Matthew J Cushing et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 16

Inspired by Swedish legislation, Vision Zero policies are being adopted in the United States with increasing frequency. Although some view the goal of eliminating serious injury and death on the road system as impractical, Sweden’s lower rates of road-related injury and death provide compelling evidence that more can be done to improve US cycling safety. We examine existing Vision Zero and cycling-related literature to highlight the central compo…
