Reinstatement and a resurgence‐like effect in an odor‐signaled multiple schedule in rats
This study examined determinants of relapse in rats within a multiple schedule signaled by three odor stimuli (S1, S2, S3). In both experiments, reinforcement was programmed for all components in Phase A, extinction in S1 was programmed in Phase B, extinction in both S1 and S2 in Phase C, and extinction in all components in Phase D. In Experiment 1, an increase of S1 responding was observed in Phase C when extinction was introduced in S2. This re…
Is Tickling a Reinforcer for Adult Rats
Transfer of a novel discriminative function across functional stimulus class members in rats
This experiment explored a rodent model of functional class formation by assessing the transfer of a novel discriminative function across class members. Following simple successive discrimination reversal training and consistently strong probe performance indicative of the formation of two six‐member functional classes (X1–X6 and Y1–Y6), subjects were trained on a novel discrimination task to respond in the right‐side port in the presence of odor…
Functional equivalence and class expansion in rats using olfactory stimuli
Simple discrimination reversal procedures have been successful in demonstrating functional equivalence classes in animals. The current study tested whether class expansion could be demonstrated in rats following the formation of functional equivalence classes. Olfactory stimuli were assigned to two arbitrary sets, and rats were trained on a successive simple discrimination task to respond to members of only one set at a time. When discriminated r…
