Making Sense of Climate Change
This article analyses examples of how journalists use their bodies and draw from their senses in climate reporting published in Canada between 2019 and 2024. Francoeur’s arguments for “bodying the journalist” are used in this paper as a conceptual framework to investigate the promises and challenges of embodied climate witnessing by journalists and define characteristics of journalists’ embodiment in storytelling (Francoeur, C. 2021. “Bodying the…
Shifting Spaces
This study explores how journalism students in one Canadian post-secondary programme perceived their training through the pandemic. We draw on journalism pedagogy literature, Bourdieu's field theory, and Zelizer's conceptualisation of interpretive communities to interrogate how remote learning disrupted opportunities for socialisation in the journalistic field. Through surveys of and interviews with students, we identify shared narratives of loss…
Fighting the Same Old Battle”
Background This article examines a week-long road blockade that took place in northern Alberta in January, 1983, organized by members of the Fort McKay First Nation and the Fort McKay Métis Community. The communities leveraged their blockade against a logging company, expanding the conversation to demand compensation, tougher oil sands pollution management, and better healthcare access. Analysis A critical discourse analysis of newspaper coverage…

Co-movement revisited
This viewpoint introduces a long-view assessment of communications developments in northern Canada through a conversation between the authors. Discussing how communications and cultural development practices in Canada’s north (north of 60 degrees of latitude) have changed in the last four decades, we advocate relationship-building and co-movement in the development of communities’ cultural persistence
It Won’t Go Viral”
This Research in Brief reflects upon how postsecondary resources were used to create a feminist, free, online, and pedagogical documentary about the Charter of Québec Values in 2013–2014, to intervene in the mediated story of the legislation and to influence public policy. The authors discuss the scholarly context that influenced their documentary-making approach, as well as their process as first-time producers, and argue for the use of online t…
Prayers on the Record
Prayers on the RecordMobilizing Indigenous Futures and Discourses of Spirituality in Canada’s Pipeline Hearings Patricia H. Audette-Longo (bio) Verlie Nelson, a member of the Haisla First Nation’s Beaver Clan, offered an opening prayer on the first day of community hearings held in January 2012 in Kitamaat Village, British Columbia, to weigh the potential effects of building the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline in western Canada.1 The hearings,…
Outsiders Still
As I took up Vivian Smith's book, Outsiders Still: Why Women Journalists Love-and Leave-Their Newspaper Careers, news broke that the newsroom to which I once belonged, The Edmonton Journal, was hit by a new round of layoffs. The first publicly-reported dismissals were those of the paper's female editor-in-chief and female managing editor. 1 Altogether, thirty-five people were dismissed as operations at the Journal and Edmonton Sun were folded tog…
