Integrate and embrace or isolate and hide? Using Q-method to understand how to incorporate large-scale solar in rural Nova Scotia, Canada
Large-scale solar (LSS) facilities, also called solar farms, are increasingly being built as part of the national transition to renewable energy. LSS can have landscape impacts that concern rural residents and cause community pushback. This paper identifies rural residents' views about integrating LSS into rural landscapes of Nova Scotia, Canada, a province new to LSS where community pushback has already occurred. We do not focus on whether LSS s…
From promise to practice. A landscape perspective on discrepancies between permit documentation and built solar power plants
Over the past years, the implementation of solar energy technology in the landscape has increased significantly. Landscape quality, an objective for solar power plant (SPP) development in the Netherlands, is therein potentially compromised. In this study, we examine the discrepancies of five Dutch SPPs through post-occupancy evaluation and structured interviews. We found 79 discrepancies in spatial measures. Interviewees attributed discrepancies …
Agrivoltaics and landscape change
The need to advance energy transition has arisen from the global challenge of climate change. Shifts to renewable energy sources, such as solar energy, are crucial for reducing carbon emissions and mitigating climate change. The use of agrivoltaics—the combination of food and renewable energy production with photovoltaic technology—is gaining scientific attention. Agrivoltaics is a type of multifunctional energy landscape and thus reduces land us…
Towards a typology of solar energy landscapes
Development of ground-mounted solar power plants (SPP) is no longer limited to remote and low population density areas, but arrives in urban and rural landscapes where people live, work and recreate. Societal considerations are starting to change the physical appearance of SPPs, leading to so-called multifunctional SPPs. In addition to electricity production, multifunctional SPP produce food, deliver benefits for flora and fauna, mitigate visual …
Climate adaptation, urban regeneration and brownfield reclamation
The transition to renewable energy is a powerful driver for large-scale landscape transformation. Environmental design is increasingly engaged in this transition, but little is known about purposefully designed renewable energy landscapes. To improve the design of large-scale energy landscapes we reviewed the literature on three innovative large-scale landscape transformations: Room for the River Nijmegen-Lent (The Netherlands), Queen Elizabeth O…
